Looking for secluded place to stay in the Keys

I am planning a surprise getaway for my husband - still a couple of years out. Thinking about the Florida Keys, want tropical feel but not too far away from our young kids at home (Alabama). Any ideas for very secluded, romantic place that is still close to good ammenities? (eg, like we're the only ones there until it's time for dinner!) So far I'm leaning towards Little Palm Island. Looking to stay 4, maybe 5, days and to spend somewhere between $5 to $10 thousand. Goals are relaxing on a beautiful beach, maybe snorkeling, otherwise very low-key. Thanks

You can't do better in the keys than Little Palm Island. Bear in mind, though, that the keys are coral and the beaches there are not the wide, white sandy ones found other places in Florida.

Having said that...I'd jump at Little Palm Island.

As SusanCS said, the Keys, which have a lot of character and charm, aren't really a long-white-beach-with-sand-that-hasn't-been-trucked-in and great off-shore snorkeling destination. That said, you could also take a look at The Moorings on Islamorada.

I left MS and took my wife to Little Palm Island recently for a spur of the moment romantic trip. We never left the little island. The food, spa, rooms and atmosphere was outstanding. Have dinner on the beach by candle light. There are no waves like you have at Destin and Gulf Shores. The waves are calm but you can take their little boats and paddle around the little bitty islands around the resort. People come from everywhere in their yachts to dock there and dine. The food is outstanding. You will enjoy it.

Although not a 5 star resort...Valhalla located near Marathon is my recommendation. Small place, you feel as though you're on an island, but Marathon is 5-10 minutes away. Free canoe usage, too. http://www.keysresort.com/
