After months of wanting a couples getaway and not being able to find coverage for our young kids, I am looking to travel solo just for one night away from hubby and kids. Need something commutable to/from NYC by public transportation. Need WiFi and proximity to water! Some culture would be nice too! Thank you!

Philly is great for one night. Boston is doable but really needs more than 1 night.

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought you were coming to NYC and wanted to commute into Manhattan by transit.

Easy to get there (Silver Snail or Jitney) but hard to get around without a car.

thanks nytraveler. does anyone know a place to stay with a pool, not far from beach/town? or should I just forget the area if I'm sans car?

How about taking Amtrak to Mystic, CT. Stay in the village at the Whaler's Inn or one of the B&Bs.

Montauk might be doable if you can do a Sunday through Tuesday night. But if it's a weekend, forget it. All the beach destinations in the area have weekend minimum-stay requirements of at least 2 and usually 3 nights in August.

I'd take the LIRR, but the Jitney goes there, I believe. Of course this all depends on whether you can find accommodations.
