Nuclear family: two adults, one kid (8 - who's autistic and very sensitive to sound)

Not very grand looking for under $150/night

This condo is in your range, has a pool, fireplace but no direct mountain view. We've stayed in the building but not this unit, and I think the location is great. Trails heading up the mountain are just a couple of blocks away, and there's an interesting alpine garden nearby. Lots of restaurants within walking distance, and/or you can take the free town bus to Lionshead.

For breakfast/lunch/dinner, try Blu's along Gore Creek in the Vail Village Core area. The new bowling alley and restaurant Bol in the Solaris Center doesn't look like any bowling alley I've ever been to, but we didn't try the food. Across the street from Bol is Pazzo's Pizza. Sweet Basil would be a foodie splurge.

When we were in Vail last summer, if you bought a ticket to ride the gondola, you got a voucher for free lunch in the mountain-top lodge. I assume they'll repeat that offer this summer, and the views and hikes at the top IMO are worth the gondola fare. In Lionshead, you can rent bikes, take them up the gondola, and ride (mostly coast) down on the graded roads.

If you're interested in a day trip, we really enjoyed the drive to and time spent in Leadville. The road skirts along the edge of the site of Camp Hale where the 10th Mountain Division trained during WWII. The camp was closed and dismantled decades ago, but you can drive on the remnants of the roads and read the self-guided tour signs to get a sense of the scope of the camp.

When you get to Leadville, you can visit the National Mining Museum and take a train ride on the old mining tracks into the mountains above the town.
