When are you coming? Prices vary wifely based on which month, with January and February he cheapest while October, November, and early December are most expensive.

We stayed at the DoubleTree Times Square the last couple of times we went . . It's right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of times square, so does not suit everyone, but we like that.

Hi khedge. Saw your previous post, you are making a good decision by staying in NYC rather than Newark. You might want to consider bidding on Priceline or Hotwire. With your budget you should be able to get a 4* in a good neighborhood.

Welcome & enjoy NYC!

Just returned to see your answer and saw my new favorite typo . . . "Prices vary wifely" . . . "widely"

Per KatieR's response, I checked Hotwire -- there is one 4* hotel listed for under $200 and it's in Soho. Looking on betterbidding, all the 4* hotels in the Soho area would be good choices. Personally, I would jump on it. Everything else, even on Hotwire, is in the high $200s to high $300s.

Oh, and when you do decide to book a hotel, keep in mind that the hotel tax in NY is very high -- maybe 16%?

That 4* in Soho looks great, but I can't find it on Hotwire! ?

What dates did you input -- I guessed and input Sept. 3-7.

I love soho! my favorite area to stay in..... last time I was in NY, I stayed at the Gansevoort which is nearby but it was October and very expensive. I would not hesitate to stay at a 4 star in Soho for anything under $300.

I input Sept 3-6 for 3 nights. I did find a 3.5 star for around $250, so I'm thinking that's pretty good!

The 4* hotels you're likely to win in Soho/downtown area on Priceline are not in Soho but in the financial district. Unless you're ok with that, I wouldn't do it. If you don't mind being in the financial area, the Marriott downtown which is a nice hotel can be booked for ~ $215/night on it's own website. I also don't think $250 for a 3.5* hotel is a great deal for the holiday weekend. What defines a "decent" hotel for you?

Betterbidding.com has a list of both Priceline and Hotwire hotels by area and also has a wins calendar so you can see what hotels people won for what dates/prices.

You could get the Millenium UN Plaza hotel for $224-246/night plus tax by using the discount code ppc. All rooms have great views and there's a somewhat rare enclosed rooftop swimming pool.

Here's an offer for the brand new Cassa hotel that should yield a rate of $249/night (although I can't seem to make it work). http://www.travelzoo.com/hotels/new-york/868349/

Here's a special for the Benjamin, another good hotel. http://www.travelzoo.com/hotels/new-york/868411/

If you want to be in Soho, the Hampton Inn is available within your budget. The Hampton Inn Seaport is even cheaper and a nice hotel in a lovely spot near the water (but not in midtown).

Mclaurie, the 4* hotels listed on betterbidding as being in Soho are the Embassy Suites, Gild Hall, Millennium Hilton, Tribeca Grand, SoHo Grand, Smyth Hotel, and Thompson LES. Are these mostly in the financial district?

khedge, I put in your dates and it still comes up. It says $199.25 per night "provided by hotels.com". I have no idea what that means -- some say "Hotwire Hot Rate" and some say "provided by hotels.com". When I checked on hotels.com, I didn't see anything comparable.

I think the Ftizgerald Grand Central might work for you. We've stayed there a few times when doing things in the city. I've been able to pay around that when I've stayed.

Hotel is located within a block of Grand Central Station, making it easy to get around most parts of town.

Here's what the hotels.com thing means on Hotwire:

Hotwire and Hotels.com are owned by the same company. When Hotwire has no opaque inventory in a zone/quality level they'll offer something from their partner as an alternative, to try and keep your hotel spending "in the family".

I clicked "continue" and it turns out the $199.25 rate is for Gild Hall, a Thompson Hotel. See if you can find that on Hotels.com. It's rated 4.0 on Tripadvisor, but, as mclaurie said, it is actually in the financial district, not in SoHo.

sf7307, if you read what I wrote, I said "...the 4* hotels you're likely to win.." are mostly in the financial district not Soho. Yes, the most likely wins are the Millenium Hilton, Gild Hall and Embassy Suites, all of which are in the financial district. As you point out, the Hotwire hotel is Gild Hall. Many people find being in that area on a weekend dull. If khedge wants to stay at the Gild Hall, he/she can book a superior king on quikbook.com for $200/night without prepaying and be able to cancel should something better turn up.

There's a secret sale showing up on quikbook.com for Labor Day weekend on the lower east side for $209/night that looks to be the Hotel on Rivington. Fun area and nice hotel.
