In Southern California, don't miss the free Nethercutt collection, a little-known gem in Sylmar. There are two halves, one side doesn't require a reservation but you should reserve to see both sides. There's also a restored Pullman car.

I believe the Peterson museum is closed.

I do! I do, dorit!

These aren't in Illinois but pretty close. In Indiana.

The Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, IN. It's too bad you aren't coming around the Labor Day weekend because they have an auction of these vehicles, which sell for BIG $$$! www.automobilemuseum.org

In South Bend - close to the University of Notre Dame, there is the Studebaker National Museum. www.studebakermuseum.org

And, of course, there is the Hall of Fame - Indianapolis Speedway Museum - at the Brickyard - in Speedway, IN (just outside of Indianapolis). http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway...e-track/museum

The National Automobile Museum is in Reno, NV. It's wonderful. There's also the Hot August Nights festival with tons of classic cars on the street.

Doesn't the Linq (formerly the Imperial Palace) in Las Vegas Nevada have a considerable collection?
