Looking for a top notch restaurant in west LA, santa monica for husband's 50th

I'd love to find an awesome restaurant for my husband's 50th birthday. He's cooked in a French restaurant so he knows what's good altho we haven't lived in california for years we'll be visitng relatives there then. We love French, Mediterrian, Italian.....food like Alice Waters would make.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Serena

How about Melisse on Wilshire in Santa Monica? (French/new-American) that earns raves for everything.

Or on a less grand scale, the wonderful food of Suzanne Goin at Lucques?

And when all is said and done, it's still hard to fault a thing at Spago -- where even we mere mortals are often treated like celebrities.

Anyone eaten at Capo? We've thought about Valentino's but heard Capo is better.

Capo is awesome but very expensive. Easily one of the best eateries in the area.

Michael's, in downtown Santa Monica on Third, is usually credited along with Chez Panisse with pioneering the California Cuisine movement in the 70s. It's still great.

You can get great food in any city that you visit...heck your husband can even cook it at home.
When in LA, find a restaurant that will be memorable for the whole experience....not just the food. Maybe a beautiful spot where the ocean waves are crashing right outside the dining room...or the Restaurant at the Getty which makes for such a memorable evening stop while in Los Angeles, and much more than just dining.
