We're leaving DC on 5/26 & usually head to Ocracoke Island, NC but are looking for someplace different. We want to be able to get a room (not house) on the beach, some decent nightlife (like Ocracoke) but not loaded with people (like VA. Beach). We like to bike & explore, hike, etc. Any suggestions?

With he greatest of respect, "decent" nightlife in Ocracoke means what? Drinking?
Seriously, I am trying to be helpful...have you considered someplace like Hilton Head, Kiawah...obviously Myrtle Beach is out of the question as are, I assume, other places on the Carolina coast
You want to do outdoor stuff but don't want too many others around, right?
Live music & adult beverages...after a grueling 10-day motorcycle trip from LA to DC, we're looking for some relaxation. We like the "village" feel of Ocracoke - most everyone goes by bike/foot, very laid-back. Hilton Head, Kiawah are too "resort" & too big; from what Ive seen the northern section of the SC coast is mostly rental houses, scarce on motels.
Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington are very cool and would have lots of nightlife.
