Long holiday weekend, no skiing, things to do in New England or Upstate NY
I wasn't able to get away over New Year's but I need a winter weekend getaway somewhere in the northeast! I would like to be 3-5 hour drive from NYC ,wintry, but I'm not a skier. Museums and shopping works fine, walking trails. Nice hotel or inn or larger more upscale B&B. Good dinners on site or very nearby. Would like to keep room rate under $250 per night. Any great ideas?

Not so far north is West Point, Kykuit, Lyndhurst, Sleepy Hollow a little north of that is DIA, Vanderbilt, Roosevelt, Mills Mansions to name a few, Vassar College with a terrific art exhibit and instrument treasure room, Bard College , Mohonk Mt. House--a true GEM. This is just the tip of the iceberg-hope it helps!

The idea of not going too far may be a good one given the kind of winter we're having, but none of the mansions are open at this time of year. I think Lyndhurst is the only one http://www.hudsonvalley.org/content/view/18/48/
CIA (culinary institute) & Hyde Park (the Roosevelt estate) is one idea. http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...-the-visit.cfm
There are some great museums in the Berkshires like the Clark, Mass Moca, the Norman Rockwell Museum, but I think you'd be taking a big chance planning to drive that far.
What about heading toward New Hope, Pa/Lamberville, NJ via Princeton?

I was in Newport in September, so I don't think I want to go back right now.
It has been an early cold winter so that's why I don't want to drive up to the northernmost reaches of VT or Maine, or too far into the Adirondacks, for example. But I'd still like to see a winter wonderland of snow
Princeton and Westchester are daytrip places for me (and good ones, I might add) so I think I'd like to go hang out in a nice inn or hotel a little further out for a change of scenery.
I was thinking of the Berkshires, not sure how much is open (other than Mass MoCA) at this time of the year. Or maybe the southermost areas of VT?
Any inn recommendations? Mohonk is a gorgeous place, but a little rich for my blood.

We went to the Berkshires several years ago for a long weekend in February, and found plenty of things to do. We went to the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Hancock Shaker Village (they were having special events that weekend, such as a sleigh ride), did a little bit of shopping & had lunch in Stockbridge. We saw a play one night in Pittsfield (Barrington or Berkshire Stage Company). We also had dinner one night in Great Barrington which is a cute town for dinner and shopping; there's a movie theater there as well. I think you will find plenty to do in the Berkshires even without going skiing. We enjoyed the Helsinki Cafe in Great Barrington, but I think someone on this forum said they have relocated, not sure to which town.
We stayed at a B & B in Sheffield, (I think it's the Berkshire B & B).

How about the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock Vt? This is a large, upscale hotel in the village of Woodstock with a huge fireplace, a piano bar, and a restaurant on site. Woodstock is a very charming small town with many (pricey) shops, and fun places to eat. I believe the Inn offers horse drawn sleigh rides across the beautiful Vermont countryside. There are cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities nearby, and the museums and theaters of Dartmouth College are about 1/2 hour away in Hanover NH (another very charming town).

Oh yes the CIA has awesome food at great prices good tors as well (my son is a graduateand that is the where Roosevelt, Vanderbilt and numerous other mansions are. Also the Beekman Arms is the oldest Inn in America a few miles north in Rhinebeck. The Dia (worlds largest modern art museum) I mentioned before is a bit south in Beacon. Please look at Mohonk Mountain House has though. My Dad use to have conventions there and it is SO beautiful!
