Why not do a portion of the AT?
I have done lots of segments in New Hampshire, and it is always satisfying to do even a bit of The Big One.
As you know, a good hike depends a lot on the weather,so it is hard to make a firm recommendation.
There are plenty of hiking guides for western Virginia, and this may be a place where your public library and its interlibray loan service are your [free] friend.
Not to be a grump but that's terribly vague. Can you give some specifics?
-Distance desired (your 4-5 hours is someone else's 2-3 and someone else's 6-7)
-Scenery desired - waterfalls, overlooks, seclusion, etc?
-Level of strenuousness?
-How close to Leesburg? There are probably hundreds of hikes within 2 hours but if you aren't willing to drive that far, we need to know.
FTR: I think it would be more useful to pick a few hikes you would like to try after doing a bit of research and then asking here if they suit what you are looking for.
And the best hiking advice we get is from a local outdoor store. Perhaps we are spoiled because we live very close to the AT but a locally-owned and operated outdoor store will have people who can help tremendously. They will also have good local maps.
