No boardwalks was why my family vacationed there for years. Boardwalks bring more commercialization.

the town of Beach Haven does have boardwalk like attractions in one central area. So staying in the lower half of the island makes accessing BH easy.

LBI is one of my least favorite spots of all the Jersey shore. There is one road, north/south, so it's always full of traffic. The feed roads to the east and west and busy with cars avoiding the main, so are not safe for biking and/or strollers. The beaches are steep and narrow and the surf is not flat like they are to the south (Wildwood, Cape May) or to the north (Spring Lake). For years we visited dear friends whose home was there and whose hospitality we enjoyed, they are now out-of-state. There are not many restaurants since most people cook in their rental homes. There are not many hotels/motels since most people are in their rental homes, where you hear the conversations of your 6 adjacent neighbors. There is a shopping area/mall/amusement area in Beach Haven full of tschotschy (sp?) shoppes with nothing you haven't seen everywhere else. It never ceases to amaze me why it has been so popular over the last 40 years. No thanks. If you haven't booked a rental, my advice is, keep looking elsewhere. Really.

Ah gee, we go for a long weekend every year. I kind of like it but never head toward Beach Haven. True on the restaurants but if you have a kitchen it's nice.
