London Shopping

Is there anything unique I should purchase in London that I can't get in the USA? I'd like to bring home some gifts to two young adults.

You should post this on the europe board.

And it would help to know a little about them and what amount you are looking to spend - a $25 souvenir or an actual gift?

I don't know if you have these in the US, but two shops that I liked are Cath Kidston which would be good for a female or Octopus which is quite quirky. They both have a few stores in central London.

If you clock on the triangle above you can ask the moderators to move it - or you can just repost there - to get a lot more answers.

Hello, dimur, if you look to the right of where this forum reads United States Forum, upper left on your screen, you will see "Change Forum". Click on the "Change Forum" and you will see the complete lists of all the Fodor's forums.

While waiting for the change of venue for this thread, don't know what age, sex, or interests the young adults have, let me throw a few things out.

(1) Socks from the sock shop that have the London Underground or some such "British" nonsense -- works for men and women -- and I'm being serious here, because there are a lot of souvenir sock collectors out there (me included) that like to wear a souvenir rather than having the souvenir just sit and collect dusk.

(2) Fingerless gloves, black, of course, and acrylic.

(3) Candy assortment, but my personal favorites are Yorkie Raisin & Bisquit chocolate bar, milk chocolate orange bars, and Smarties.

(4) Packable, non-perishable food stuff. So forget the spotted dick in the freezer section, even though the name is unique. Garibaldi bisquits are always a big hit with young people; English crisps are (in my view) the best in the world and come in a zillion flavors.

Surfergirl,
You have been VERY helpful....that was exactly the kind of advice I was looking for! My son is 25 and in to the outdoors, nature and history. My daughter, 21, loves fashion, sports, and kwirky fun stuff. Lemme know if you have any other suggestions...I can spend up to $100 on each of them.
Thanks again

Let me start with the 21 year old daughter --

If she trusts your judgment and you know her size and style, I would be running to the Top Shop (at Oxford Circus)and go nuts. Super cheap and stylish stuff. Alternatively, if she doesn't trust you ( ) then go to www.topshop.com or better yet, have HER go there and say "have fun". You can go and pick up her selection while there.

Mary Quant Store. They are STILL around, and still have some really cute and relatively inexpensive selections of clothing, bags, and make-up. I still go there for the make-up, especially their absolutely perfect non-brush mascara wands in a variety of colors. They used to do color makeup crayons (for lips, eyes, face), which were sell-outs, but for some stupid reason discontinued that a few years back. Now, the store, which for the last 15 years was practically across the street from Harrods, moved last year to the Sloane Square area, across the street from Peter Jones, down a little corridor just off Sloane Square called Duke of York Square (no. 37 to be exact). If you get off the tube at Sloane Square, look for the Kings Road offshoot or Peter Jones Dept. store. Walk about a second on the left side of Kings Road and you'll be there. Then, my suggestion is to continue walking down Kings Road for a fun look -- there's an open market down the road close to the Habitat furniture store; stop for a drink and fries, or even a bite to eat at Henry J. Beans -- on a warm day, head straight for the beer garden in back -- http://www.henryjbeans.co.uk/chelsea/ and if you don't feel like walking all the way back to the Sloan Square station, jump on the Number 11 bus heading back towards Sloan Square, but STAY ON IT. http://www.londonbusroutes.net/times/011N011.htm
It takes you past almost every London sight you'd want to see! I call it the super cheap tour bus! Remember to go up to the upper deck, try to get the front row seats and have the time of your life!

Then, there's Boots pharmacy for make-up and toiletries. They have amazing skin products -- their No. 7 is world reknown. Check out the interesting nail polishes and make-up colors.

Finally, Selfridges -- their young clothing is on the ground floor, towards the back (meaning, away from Oxford Street). Pricier clothing, but great sales.
