Loews or Miramar in Santa Monica

Trying to decide between these two hotels - any advice appreciated.

i stayed at the lowes about 5 years ago and it was amazing. rooms were great. staff extremely friendly and the location, a walk right down to the ocean, could not be beat.

I haven't stayed at either, but have seen Loews. It looks nice, but not special, a nice 3 star hotel. People on this board have raved about the Fairmont Miramar, and I believe it was included on the Conde Nast reserve list.

Have stayed at the Miramar only (but when it was still a Sheraton), been inside the Loews, too.
Whereas the Loews is basically directly on the beach (just a minor side street to cross) and more convenient to the Pier, I think it is far more generic, while the Miramar has much more character. Besides, it faces the Ocean, too. It is older, though, but that is its charm and it has been immaculately kept up to date to my experience.
As I assume that you have a car anyway and as you evidently intend to travel to Universal Studios (judging from your former thread), the location aspect of the Loews will not count as much in its favor.
If you can swing it, I believe the Miramar is just classier.

Let me expand on my previous post vis-à-vis Loews vs. Miramar. You can't really go wrong with either choice. These are both first-class luxury hotels. However, having been to both, and having clients who have stayed at both, the Miramar ends up ahead. I have NEVER had a client prefer the Loews.

The amenity level at both hotels is very high, no question. You'll get a clean, comfortable room appointed beautifully, with the expected niceties like high-end toiletries, turn-down service, etc. But the service at the Miramar (especially Conference Services) is just that little bit better, and the property has the charm that you only get from being in business since the 1920s. The place has HISTORY. The Loews is a nice business hotel, but it just doesn't have that patina of "historical playground of the rich and famous" that the Miramar has (don't you WANT to tread the same grounds Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow and Marilyn Monroe did?).

No question. If you want your visit to be merely comfortable, the Loews. If you want your visit to be really special, the Miramar.
