Lodging between Edenton NC and Washington DC?

Can somebody suggest a nice motel or B&B in a quiet town east of Petersburg or Richmond VA? We want to be away from I-95 for the night and would actually like to avoid driving on I-95 at all that first day. We know we'll have to drive it the next day from Richmond north.

We'll be leaving Edenton NC in late afternoon, coming up Route 40 toward Petersburg. Are we better off staying around Sussex so we can avoid I-95?

Thanks for any ideas you can give us.

Why are you even considering using 95 North of Richmond? You can easily use a combination of 17 and 301; the latter will either take you into Washington (if necessary via an easy connection) or allow you to continue northbound.

We hadn't thought of that route because of timing, but if you know of a good place along 17 or 301, please let me know.

You could take 17 north, get on I-664 to skirt Portsmouth and cross over/under the water, then get back on 17 north at Newport News and stay in Yorktown. There are several nice-looking B&B's there and Yorktown is a nice spot. I don't know any specifically, but you could probably find some other nice ones scattered around that general area on the water, or along the Rappahannock as you go up 17.

After Yorktown, 17 north goes through a stretch of a commercial strip with lights around Gloucester-not that big of a hassle. After that, it opens up to a nice, lightly-travelled divided highway through some pretty countryside all the way to Fredericksburg.

Thank you both. On Friday at noon we still didn't know where we were going to spend that night, but we wound up being able to leave Edenton early enough that we were able to get home by midnight.
