Live in the Tri-State Area and never saw....

I wonder how many of us travelers live in the NYC area and have never been to the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park Zoo, The Radio City Christmas show , Staten Island and all the other things people flock to NYC for.
I have to admit I am one of them, The only touristy thing I have done is the Circle Line. Anyone else care to admit what they haven't scene

I plead guilty
I have never been in the Empire State Building. I have never been on the Circle Line but I did take a Waterways Ferry to and from NJ!
I saw Bette Midler in Radio City and Riverdance.
I have been to the Central Park zoo more times than I can count.
I went to Staten Island and bought a puppy a long time ago.
Thank goodness I can say (and remember) that I had Thanksgiving Dinner at Windows on the World a long time ago too~

Happens all the time! If something good is in your backyard, you ignore it. I was born in Queens and didn't even see, let alone climb, the Statue of Liberty until I was a married woman with two children. My husband, who was born in England, visited years before me. Now we live in Indianapolis and I can hear the roar of the engines practicing during race month (if the wind is right) and guess how long it took us to actually go to the 500? Seven years. And even then we went only because my brother-in-law came from England wanting to see it!

Guilty, guilty!

I grew up in Stamford, CT, just outside of NYC. We did not go to NYC much. When my parents took us in to "The City" (and it did not involve relatives), we generally went to the Bronx Zoo, Museum of Natural History or to a Radio City or a Broadway Show. Growing up, I saw exactly 3 Broadway Shows: "Bye, Bye Birdie", "The Miracle Worker", and "Subways are for Sleeping". The reason you never heard of the last one was that it was awful. My parents did not have much money and a trip to NYC was a big deal.

I first went up in the Empire State Building when I was 17 and a friend from France insisted on going.

I have never been up in the Statue of Liberty, taken the Circle Line Cruise or been to the Radio City Christmas Show.

As mentioned, I have been to the Bronx Zoo, but never to the one in Central Park.

I did, by the way, take my kids up in the Empire State Building, so I have now been twice. Unfortunately, I never went to the top of the World Trade Center. Such is life. . . .

When I go to the NYC area now it is usually in connection with family and/or a high school reunion. In between the visiting, I do not have a lot of time for the sights. Having grow up in the area, it is not where I would choose to vacation.

It is certainly true when you live in an area you sort of ignore the tourist sites. You just live your life.

Yep Guilty!

Born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens and have worked in the Bronx or Manhattan my adult life.
That's pitiful.
I have been to the Empire State Building a few times, always with out of town guests. Never been to the Statue of Liberty, Central Park Zoo, Christmas Spectacular, or the Circle Line.

I was to the top of the WTC a few times (I was probably with the same out of town guests that I took to the top of the Empire State Building) and I was there when the WTC came down. #39;(

But I have down all the touristy things when I go to visit other cities! Does that even things out?? :-?

I found it interesting on a recent vacation to NYC that many New Yorkers couldn't give us directions to various sights. The best source of info came from other tourists. Talk about living in a bubble...

Lived here all of my life and been to all of the places you mention with the exception of Staten Island. I never realized it was a place tourists flocked to. What on Earth do they visit there? The landfill?

Staten Island, the destination of the Staten Island ferry
We bought our puppy from a Coast Guard Captain so we got to go to their house.

Anyone who has children will probably have been to more of these places, who could not go to one of these Zoos! at least a hundred times

You are so right, and there is so much here in our "backyard" to see and do, sometimes it's overwhelming for visitors.

I have a great story about the Empire State Building. Each year 1 Girl Scout or Boy Scout troop is allowed to sleep overnight at the top, and one year in the late 70's it was my troop of Girl Scouts. There were about 30 girls that and 10 adults and we walked up Park Ave from the Church where we met each week. Each girl carrying a sleeping bag and a small overnight bag and some food for the trip. My co-leader arrranged the trip for us and we thought it would be a great experience for our girls. As we walked up Park Ave, people would slow their cars down and ask what we were doing, it was funny, they were concerned we were going to camp in Central Park, lol. We explained that it was already set up and yes the Empire State Building knew we were coming. We had a ball and it's something the girls (gee they are now all in their 30's.... yikes, will remember always).

If you are coming to NYC this summer, you may know that we are having a terrible budget crunch, so I would ask you to go to at least one of the zoos here in town. Our Major is thinking about shutting down several of the Zoos because of budget cuts and that would be awful for the city. There is a samll guest fee or you can join the Zoo, with your family and get the monthly publication (we are members).

Have a great time when you visit our fair city.

Yes, I suppose that it would take an acute case of boredom to get me to visit things that I've passed by literally hundreds of times on my way to do something better!

I am so happy that I am not alone. Iwas born and brought up in Greenwich Ct and now live in Stamford. My husband was born in India and lived in The UAe most of his adult life and has seen every tourist attraction in NYC.
This year we make it a point to see something. Perhaps A NYC Fodoite get together and we all could go see a site. LOL

I'vw lived my entire life on islands in NYC. Born in Manhattan, moved to Queens as a kid, and back to Manhattan where I've been for 20+ years.

Statue of Liberty, Circle Line, etc. were all class trips in school, my grandparents used to take me to Radio City, but I haven't been back in years.

I have clients in the Empire State, so I'm still there on occasion.

FOr me, the typical toursit destinatiions aren't all thet interesting after you've done them,

That's just me. Hey, I've been to Paris 5 or 6 time and never been to the Eifel tower.

I feel lucky I've seen most of the sights-usually with out of town guests! The one place I've never been (I'm sure there are others) is the Cloisters. (Have also never been to the museum on Ellis island. The last time I was at the Statue of Liberty I was 8! and it wasn't there.)

We went to NYC for the St. Patrick's day parade in March of 2001. We walked by the World Trade Center on the way to go to the Empire State Building and thought it would be neat to see if we could go to the top. On the way back we almost didn't go in because it was getting late and we thought we could do it on our next trip to NYC. I'm glad we didn't wait.

I've been there! I've been there!! I love NYC, sightseeing, the shows, people watching, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Carnegie Deli, Times Square and all of it. I'm a tourist and a softie. I love seeing how America works - from Washington DC to NYC to everywhere - I can't seem to get bored with it and I hope I never do.

Being a transplant New Yorker (it was a dream come true to live here) I did most everything on my countless trips to the city when I was a tourist.

However now I have done most of that list more times than I can count since the all of the family visitors have never been to the city and have the exact same list of sights they have to see. Why do I continue to do it with them? Simple, to me there is nothing greater that legging it around the greatest city in the world, but the real reason is being able to see New York through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time, again and again. There is nothing like it and to be able to relive that experience every one or two months is just great!

Additionally, once we moved here, my wife discovered her big conglomerate company ID got her into a lot of the sights sans entry fees. With the "wonderful" sprinter season we have had this year and 10 of the last 11 weekends having some form of rain in them, this year has been the year of the indoor activity and that means museams and lots of them.

Yet, despite the family visits the rainy days and my earlier tourists days there are still some things I haven't done: climb inside Lady Liberty, tour the USS Intrepid, take a Circle Line cruise, hop on the double decker bus trip, be in a TV show audience, Coney Island to name a few. Of course, for some of that list there is really no point but to me the greatest thing about New York is that no matter how long you have lived here there always seems to be a list!
