LGA Transportation by Car Service

When I have been to New York in the past we have taken a taxi to our hotel in Manhattan. This time there will be 4 adults. In the past, I have had some guys approach about how they could take me to our hotel via car for $40. Are these guys legit? or are we still better off taking a taxi with 4 people and luggage. Thanks

No they are probably not "legit", they could be from a car service, and have no fare back to the city, they could be a "gypsy" cab, or they could be Fred from down the street trying to make a few extra dollars.

A cab would probably be the least expensive way to get into the city, depending on where your hotel is, the cost will probably be around $30 with toll and tip. Ask the driver to take the Midtown Tunnel, it's usually the quickest way into the city.

Have fun while you're here.

It is NEVER a good idea to take these guys. Some are legit and some are NOT. They may claim one price and when you arrive at your hotel attempt to extort more. Once you're in their car they're in control. Neither you nor anyone else reading this thread should EVER EVER chance getting into a car with someone you haven't hired yourself. Someone recently told a story here about a bad scene with one of these guys. Just say NO.

You should either take a cab, or if you want to spend a bit more and have some more comfort, order a car service ahead to pick you up and pay for something a bit larger than a regular sedan.

It's a really short ride in from LGA. I would just get a cab unless the rest of your party wants to start the trip with a splurge.

Tel Aviv and Carmel are the 2 services that are mentioned most often with prices similar (and sometimes less) to cabs. But if you want a splurge and certainty of a nice car, I'd suggest Crown which has a website of 1800crown.com I think.

Agree that you must NEVER use these guys.

There is a (small) chance that they are from a car service with a slow night - but they are most likely to be scammers. They have been known to hold luggage captive until paid - and have charged naive tourists hundreds of dollars for a $45 dollar ride.

I don't know if I'd trust anyone named Carmellimo, either. Isn't that the name of one of The Sopranos?

Actually, Patrick, Carmel is one of the reputable airport car services. I've used them a few times and have been pleased. You can reserve online - we did this and it worked fine - or call (212) 666-6666 in NY area or 1-800-9-CARMEL. They tend to be lower in price tham most other car services but the service is fine.
