LBI/NJ Shore Question

Looking to find a last minute rental this summer with our 2 year old. Have heard LBI is very family-oriented. I know at this point beggars can't be choosers, but which areas should I ideally look in? We would prefer less crowded beaches, love to cook/bbq (especially since we live in NYC and don't get the opportunity to BBQ!) so we don't need to be too close to restaurants, etc (but we would need to pick up food to cook). Some days we might want to take our son into town to do something fun, but mainly we would hope to be at the beach. With a 2yo, we don't need much nightlife! We would be happy hanging out on our porch each evening, just relaxing. Would love your thoughts and advice. Thanks!

Try to rent a condo on the ocean in Brigantine, N.J. Quiet town, lovely beach. You'll probably have to go through a realtor. And consider September or even early October, when it's still warm and pretty but cheaper and less crowded.

When I had a beach house in Bay Head, I used to love September at the beach as the weather was usually great and it wasn't crowded. But, it was a ghost town, even on a Saturday night.

Not crowded was fine with me. But, it was empty. If that's what you want, you will have plenty of options for September. If it isn't what you want, then consider something in August.

I think LBI is great and has a real "beachy" feel about it whereas some of the towns further north, have a large permanent population and are maybe a bit less casual. (Pt. Pleasant, for example.)

There are several towns that in reality don't vary all that much. The only one that might be a bit different is Surf City which is just across the bridge from the "mainland."

Most rentals run from Saturday to Saturday. Any real estate agent probably has several options.

You also might want to check out Avalon. We had planned on doing that last summer based on recommendations from several friends. We changed our plans but from what I discovered, it looked like a great spot.

Rachel:

NOt sure if you found something yet, but I would suggest Beach Haven. There are still places available and you'll hve your choice of ocean side, near the ocean or bay side to choose from (some of the Bay side condos have pools, which might be appealing). Beach Haven has good beaches and depending on how close you are to Center Street (town center), you can walk to a variety of restaurants as well as to Fantasy Island which is a kids amusement park. Your son won't be able to do everything but they have a carousel.

Per other posters, rentals are by the week. Nearly all the houses I have ever rented had grills.

I've rented several houses in Beach Haven over the years and 2nd the recommendation. We've used www.lbirealestate.com - they are one of the bigger rental agencies & manage a good selection of properties.

No need to stay close to the town center - it's an easy drive from anywhere in Beach Haven, and an easy drive back away when you've had your fill.

Most if not all the rentals have bbq on the deck to use. There is a decent (Acme?) supermarket right in Beach Haven that will have just about all your daily needs. We bring hard to find items with us, sometimes stop at the PathMark inland (bigger store) to stock up, then get daily items at the Acme.

With small kids I prefer to be on the ocean block - no streets to cross and at most a 5min walk to the beach. Cost is higher but walk is shorter - a bonus for lunch and bathroom breaks, plus sunrise and evening stops back at the beach. Ocean side is 2-3 blocks removed from the beach, but on the ocean side of the main n/s road.

With a 2yr old you're not limited by school dates. Your options and cost will be much better if you go the week or 2 after labor day. Beach will be very quiet during the week, but you still have summer weather.

Egads...this is why eating lunch, reading Fodors and finalizing a work document should not be done together.
