Flying with the family from LAX to PIT on early morning of Good Friday. We have an hour and 5 minute layover in Charlotte. It seems to be a smaller airport. We are flying American and going from big plane to big plane. An I being overly optimistic that we have enough time or should I plan on sprinting?

CLT is smaller in terms of number of airlines and terminals. But It is an active hub and not smaller in terms of throughput. You are going to have to move along at a good clip in my experience, too bad because they introduced those wonderful Carolina rockers for people with longer layovers.

American has all 16 gates on the B Concourse but also has several gates in other Concourses. If your flight is on time and comes to a B gate and leaves from a B gate you will not have a problem.

If I were you I would sit as far forward as possible in the plane - that can easily save you 15 minutes getting off and on your way to the next gate. And be sure you know which gate and how to get to it.

Obviously a great deal depends on which concourse your plane arrives and from which concourse your plane departs and if it arrives on time.

I agree that to maximize your transfer time I would select seats as far forward as possible (if you are in Economy). Assuming you are going to have to sprint also assumes a greater distance between the two concourses. "Big plane" as in a non-commuter? I somehow doubt you are coming n on a wide-body from LAX.

I've changed in Charlotte many times and have often done so from the commuter concourse over to one of the others. An hour should be plenty of time IME.

They will tell you the connection gate before landing. No real way to say. We always seem to get the LAST gate on a concourse for arrival or departure.
American used to be only Concourse A but with the merger it is all concourses now. It's really the commuter and international concourses that are "out there" so I'd guess Dukey will be correct.

If you are on time, you will have no problem, even if you get unlucky with the gate assignments. And as you are not on commuter sized planes, you will not be stuck out at the end of concourse E. Make use of the moving walkways and you can be from one gate to another in less than 10 minutes.
