Lava-Side Inn on Big Island of Hawaii (near the volcano)
Over the past few years I have stayed at 8 different hotels/condos/guest houses on the Big Island (some more than once). I'll be there again in a couple of months (with a friend) and want to do something a little...er, I mean A LOT different this time. Has anyone ever stayed at the Lava-Side Inn Bed & Breakfast? It's the last inhabited house in the Royal Gardens subdivision on the active volcano. It's completely surrounded by lava, but we can get dropped off there by helicopter. Jack, the guy who runs the B&B, can also lead us on a treacherous hike to his place if we want to go the "budget route." I just read about it in a book, but I'm curious if any Fodorites have stayed there. The book made it sound so beautiful and awesome!! I've already hiked over molten lava, so I'm not too scared of that (if we hike there).
By the way, if any of you have taken a helicopter tour over the volcano, the pilots always point out Jack's place. That's the B&B!
