Latta Plantation near Charlotte, NC??? - Looking for more than NASCAR in NC
Want to see something new on our drive from Carolina Beach, NC back to ATL. Has anyone been to this plantation? Looking for ideas on things to see/do on the way (Nc77 to I-85). Historic, good eats, nice sleeps.

Latta Plantation is a nice area, particularly for horseback riding + the Raptor Center is located there as well. www.carolinaraptorcenter.org. There is not much on 74 which I am assuming is your route, until you get to Charlotte. Lots to do Uptown as well. Just depends on how far off the beaten path you wish to go. There are lots of CLT posts on here that should be helpful. Take the light rail to Southend (from Uptown) would be another suggestion.

Latta Plantation is a lot more than horseback!! It is an 18th cnetury plantation house/restored farm with a nice historic site. The Raptor Center is also a nice visit. It is on the same road.
On the other side of Charlote, accessible from I85 is the Museum of History with the Hezekiah Alexander House on that property--dates from about the same time as Latta. Latta is a wood house. Alexander is a stone house. Very nice exhibits.
Near the Museum of History is maybe the best Vietnamese restaurant in town--Long Tranh (not sure of the spelling--I'll check). Near Latta you could come on into Charlotte for a restaurant OR pick some fried chicken at Price's Chicken Coop--it was just featured as one of the best fried chicken places in Bon Appetit. It is all take out.
But near there there are almost unlimited restaurants of all kinds.

Brian in Charlotte--loved the suggestion to USNWC--one of the things on my "to-do before I die" is rafting. Just one question--their site is sponsored by the Carolinas Medical Center (ouch--talk about product placement!).
thanks everyone for the great suggestions--anything from Charlotte down I-85 to Atlanta?

All of these are great suggestions.
I might add that if you don't feel like rafting this time (or doing any number of other things they offer there) the whitewater center is still a great place just to walk around and watch the sites (the only charge would be $5 dollars for parking). Then if you start getting a little hungry they have a nice little restaurant there with outdoor seating (Rivers Edge Bar and Grill).
As far as heading back on I85 to Atlanta here are some suggestions:
(History)
Kings Mountain National Military Park
Kings Mountain
Cowpens National Battlefield (have not personally been here)
(Shopping)
Outlet Mall in Gaffney
Main Street in Greenville (Mast General Store is a must)
(Sightseeing)
Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont, NC
http://www.dsbg.org/
Falls Park on the Reedy in Greenville
http://www.fallspark.com/index_content.html
(Hotel)
Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Riverplace in Greenville (great location/walking distance to shopping/restaurants, etc.)
Lastly if you happen to change your route and find yourself on I77 (just south of Charlotte) I would highly recommend heading out to Historic Brattonsville (where The Patriot was filmed).
