Last minute: late lunch near Neue Gallerie?
Hi, all,
We plan to visit the Neue Gallerie (at long last, I am thrilled!) tomorrow and will need to have something substantial for lunch, late lunch most likely. I know we can go to the Cafe Sabarsky, and I am pretty much set on doing that, unless there is a reason not to, and unless you can suggest a better alternative in that general area.
We are staying at the Muse, going to a play at 7pm, so don't want to travel too far afield.
We eat fish and dairy, but not meat. Vegan/veg is fine, but any place will have something we can eat, and we like all cuisines. Price not really an object, but we won;t be dressed for anything really fancy.
Thank you!

When we were there last week, there were four people waiting for the restaurant and there was a line around the block to get into the museum.
We had lunch at Le Pain Quotidian on Madison between 84th and 85th because we thought we would have to wait in the long line to get into the restaurant. That was a mistake.
We didn't feel like waiting 45-minutes to get into the museum, so we skipped it and went to the Met.
By the way, we enjoyed unusual and interesting exhibits at the new Met space located in the old Whitney building.

You might want to eat first, then you can go straight to the entrance desk to see the museum, and avoid standing in the long line. Worked for us last time I was there.
Apparently interest in the museum hasn't died down--I think The Woman in Gold film really ratcheted up attendance.

Unless there is some reason you don't want to go to Cafe Sabarasky, I'd go there. I don't think there are many restaurants right near that museum, there aren't any on 5th Avenue that I can recall, of course. Others within a few blocks are either fast casual places or Italian, it seems to me. If you want Italian, I'd try this one

or Morini's if yo uwnt more like a hot meal for lunch and it's kind of expensive

elberko, excellent plan, thank you for the suggestion. Cafe Sabarsky it is. Early lunch
HTTY, I had no idea it would be that busy--I really hope we can get in, we have a full day planned on Friday in another part of town. We're heading to the new Whitney, as it happens.
DebitNM, I will let you know...

Christina, thank you, we were posting at the same time. I saw Morini's on Yelp or something. The thing is, lunch will be our main meal that day, so it's an option if time permits. But sounds like Cafe Sabarsky is the way to go, which is perfect.
Thanks, all!

elberko, THANK YOU! Your tip saved us at least an hour, and prevented us from being discouraged when we saw the line for entry to the Neue snaking around the block.
The line for entry wrapped around the side facing the park--30 people long, at least; there was another, much shorter (8 people), line on the other side of the entrance which was the line for the cafes (one for both), and there was a doorman at the entrance who was handling the cafe line. He asked everyone in line whether they wanted the Sabarsky (45 minute wait on a Thursday at noon) or the Fledermaus (no wait) and ushered people in one party at a time.
We were starving and pressed for time, so opted for the Fledermaus--the menu is the same at both cafes. I was disappointed to miss the Sabarsky, but we just couldn't spare the time to wait. Lunch was very nice, and then we went straight into the galleries.
This may be the best tip I have ever received here at Fodor's! Thanks again, elberko!

You are welcome, NewbE, I'm so glad it worked out.
To others who may wonder, the Fledermous is in the basement, and it's certainly pleasant enough, it just doesn't have the "am I in Vienna?" ambiance of Sabarsky.
