Las Vegas - what to do solo

I am tagging along with my husband on a business trip - he really won't have time to do stuff with me as he days/evenings will be very busy with work stuff. It is an inexpensive/short flight for me - so I am going to go - looking for great ideas on solo stuff - won't have a car & don't gamble...

I would like to spend the day at a spa - any good recommendations for a good spa or anything else? I have not been in years...

What Not to do is more of the question.

Plenty - afternoon magic shows, checking out a couple of the museums - art, Mafia, whatnot.

Hard to beat the spas at Bellagio or Wynn - but most of the major casinos I think have pretty good spas.

Don't know about the "new" City Center for spas - but it's fun to check out the crystal chandeliers at Aria or whichever one of the big resorts there has that.

Shopping - soooooooooooooo many choices - including the big center across from Wynn - that has the flying saucer like design on top.

Tour the dam - drive 20 minutes out to Red Rock Canyon - see the aquariums at different casinos and on and on.

Oops - if you don't have a car - check out tours going to Red Rock Canyon, etc.

If you've ever watched a show called "Pawn Stars" visit 713 N Las Vegas Blvd.
You can get a 24 hour pass to ride "The Deuce" up and down LV Blvd. My favorite buffet is the one upstairs in the Golden Nugget off the Fremont St. Experience (downtown).
The nugget is over 62 lb. and is the largest on public display.
There is a place well off the "strip" where you can pay to fire a machine gun.

Tomf - that reminds me. Downtown - along the Fremont Steeet Experience (great laser show at night) - the Four Queens has a good magic show/comedian (if he is still there) - and their prime rib dinner (if you join their gambler's club - no cost - just need to fill out a few things) is a great deal - $7 - or at least it was.

Also check out the Tix 4 Less booths - and there is another company - for discounts on shows, dinners, etc.

Take in a Cirque show. There are early and late shows. We have enjoyed O and Mystere . Have also heard that Terry Fator is great.

Tell us all about the spas at Bellagio and Wynn, Tommy. We'd love to hear more.

Thanks everyone! Deb that is where we are staying - so hummmmmmmmmmmmm... painting can always wait

Michelle I have not seen O and my husband said it was wonderful - maybe I will go to an early show - feel a tiny bit awkward going alone...

Will have to google Terry Fator...

clarks - my wife went to them - but I looked in and they seemed very nice. Highly rated.

O is great - and so is the same type show over at the Wynn. Can't remember the name at the moment.

Ahh - La Reve?

Again, check the Tix for Less places for discounts - even to some Cirque shows.

Momdd- don't feel awkward, go and have fun! I guess I am just used to doing things alone. I got married at 33 so if I wanted to do something, sometimes I had to go alone. DH had meetings in Mainz Germany and I wanted to see the cathedral in Cologne. So I took the train up for the day and did my sightseeing. That night at the banquet, several of the other women (different generation) were amazed I did all that alone, but they were very supportive.

You're not bringing the kids? There are lion cubs at the MGM. sharks at Mandalay Bay, Dolphins at the Mirage. A nice children's museum, Circus midway, a couple of nice aquariums, pools of course, and the natural history museum (dinos!). Then rent a car for a day and head to Lake Mead, or Valley of Fire.

Solo, if you tire of the endless casinos, the Springs Preserve is not a long cab ride from your hotel and might have something of interest to you going on that week. The lunch café there is nice, too. www.springspreserve.org

momdd, Vegas is my least favorite place, but there are things to do once you find your way out of the hotel's casino maze.

Look for art exhibits, like a Monet special show was saw at the Bellagio.

If you can afford to stay at the Bellagio, you could spend days there without ever going out in the heat.

Terry Fator won the first season of America's Got Talent. He's a really talented ventriloquist. Normally, that's not my cup of tea, but I enjoyed watching him on AGT.

Before Howard Hughes purchased Las Vegas, the MOB ran the town. That was the safest era for tourist - ever. ONLY the MOB committed crimes. Anyway, visit the MOB museum - http://themobmuseum.org/

Another museums is the Atomic Bomb museum. We had a special tour before it opened! They had free tours to Mercury test site north of LV where the bombs were tested during the 1950s - check if the tours are still available. http://themobmuseum.org

Tense - need to relax? Shoot a machine gun and other such toys
http://themobmuseum.org/

You may be tempted to drive to the Valley of Fire - I don't recommend unless you have excess time - Hoover Dam is more interesting and there are tour busses from LV. When there visit the grave of their mascot dog name Nig. He had is own personal bank account in the town of Boulder. http://hooverdamstory.com/mascot

Another tour from LV is Grand Canyon West sky walk. Just read this web site below. I've been there about three times, but can't do the skywalk - terrifying for me. Note: this canyon scene is NOT the same as the real grand canyon (narrow; not wide), but may interest you. http://www.grandcanyonwest.com/

There's also a Liberace Museum and a really cool Pinball "museum"/arcade, with free admission, and you can play the games.

Lee Ann - thank you!

No kids on this trip - just myself (and dh who will be working at events etc)

Tab - I am not a fan of Vegas but free room and a few nights away with husband is good

Michelle - you know what is weird? I am fine in many situations doing things alone (When we were just in Spain I did a number of cathedrals and museums alone as my 17 year old was not into all of them) but seeing a show seems awkward. I know - weird!

RV - thats good information - thank you !

Momdd, I hear ya. That's exactly how I ended up in Vegas the last two trips. haha

Still, I have to say, even the things recommended to do in town sound deadly boring to me.

Just an update on some of the suggestions of things to do, as some people don't seem to have been to Vegas recently. The lions are no longer at MGM - gone for good. The Liberace museum is now closed. The battle ships at Treasure Island are gone too although I don't think they were mentioned anyway. The crystal chandelier bar, which is beautiful, is in Cosmopolitan not Aria. I am not sure I like the return of the 'adult' Vegas, just didn't seem as much fun on our last trip. it seems to be getting seriously overrun with frat party types. Even the pools are no longer a serene and relaxing place to go. The best pools are party pools mostly. the casinos have half naked dancing girls gyrating on gaming tables, they even annoyed my husband after a while. Quite sad really to watch the young girls dancing for tips with stary eyes and no smiles.

lateagain - I was actually bummed about the pool party atmosphere - I had thought it would be nice to sit by the pool and when I read about the pool at the hotel we are staying at I thought "Yikes".
