I've never found a package cheaper than booking it yourself and getting the discounted rooms throught the actual hotel websites. A few months before you go, go to each website of the hotels you're interested in and sign up for their mailing lists to get the specials.
The problem with packages is, it's ppdo,so when you add upthe hotel charge levied to EACH person, I've always found it to be greater than the discounted hotel rates.
Travelaxe is a good price search tool because it not only polls Expedia, Orbitz, and the like, but also the individual hotel websites.

I agree with Mike. I usually do better booking my airfare separate from the hotel. I also do all the travel arrangements for my office staff. Most of the hotels have special on line or if you call them directly. They quote per nite - not per person. There may be some good package deals that would include ground transportation.

Mike is right. I have booked Vegas several times. Through travel agents, packages on the web and direct. Best bet is to book hotel direct with the property and find flights through the major searches (Orbitz, etc.), then book it direct with the airline to save the "service fee". I have never found an air/hotel package cheaper than this method...and I have spent countless hours trying. Have a good time!

RE: East coast to Vegas
In September 2002, G & D planned to meet us in Las Vegas. Their Newark, NJ Continental direct flight cost $260.00 each.
Our Denver - LV flight on United cost $265.00 each.
Go figure!

It's hard to give a pat answer but you're likely to get a better deal if you book a package (I found the airlines are to be cheapest). I know better is a very ambiguous term so I mean less expensive when I say better deal. I've found SW airlines and America West to have the best packages (at least from the midwest). I got a rental car, 3 nights/4 days, 2 show tickets and a couple of meal comps for $300 thru America West a year or two ago. The real beauty was we got upgraded to a suite as well (guy at the front desk was originally from our area). Enjoy!

tjc, that's true in ALL markets.
Airfares are based on competition.
You can fly out of 2 airports within 100 miles of one another and get very different fares to the same destination if one is a competitive airport and the other isn't.
Example: Providence and Boston. 45 miles apart but airlines like Southwest fly to PVD and drive the cost down.
Places like Denver are often expensive because they're dominated by one big carrier--United. So UAL jerks us around, because they can.
