las vegas hotel/moderate price and clean

we are flying into las vegas in august on our way to national park tour. We will stay one day and two nights in vegas.

Looking for a clean inexpensive-moderate priced place to stay. Doesn't have to be fancy just clean and quiet enough so that we can sleep at night. We want a place with a pool. We've never been there before so we want to see the strip. We're not interested in gambling. A place close to the strip would be nice. Since we'll be there Friday and Saturday nights some of the mid-week deals aren't available.

Any suggestions?

You really should stay on the strip - try MGM Grand (sometimes they have deals), Luxor or Monte Carlo. Other option is the Tropicana but you must be very specific about what room you want
(check out www.lvol.com). Tropicana is clean and doable (we just returned and I can compare to Monte Carlo, Luxor and MGM Grand). I am a hotel snob and Tropicana was okay - not a luxury hotel but in a good location, clean, friendly staff and a great reasonable deli called Legends. But be specific on room - we changed 3 times. Island tower is okay, newer ones Paradise? tower are the most expensive and suppose to be fine. If you can swing the Garden rooms (least expensive) I like the best if you can get specific room - try for 5000 series, third floor, facing the waterfall - its like you are in Florida. there is another series in back facing adult pool that would be okay on third floor. do not stay on first floor garden or in room facing parking lot - too much noise. hope this helps - keep checking rates alot of times will go down last minute. We got last minute rate at MGM Grande for 49.00.

There is an extended stay hotel called Candlewood Suites. It is one (long) block away from the Strip at Flamingo. It is NOT glitzy-- really doesn't look like Vegas at all. But if you want a quiet, inexpensive hotel and don't care about gambling this might fit.

This place has a pool but it's nothing special. If sitting by the pool is a high priority then I would definitely go for one of the Strip hotels, as most have really beautiful grounds.

PS-- One block is a long way, especially in August! It's reasonable to take a taxi, even though it doesn't seem necessary.

Friday and Sat. are prime times in Vegas...lot`s of Cal. people and people who hit the town for the wknd...so a good price might be hard to find..also there could be something going on in Vegas(fight,etc)...if you have your dates your arriving try travelocity.com or expedia.co and search prices on hotels..you can also click on the hotel for location and mileage from airport etc...then call hotels and ask for any special prices/offers...like AAA,AARP. or internet or manager specials ,etc...got a fantastic price this March for hotel from being on the mailing list for our hotel on e-mail specials..also check for LA Times online..have heard you can find good prices on the Travel section...have fun.. try to stay centrally located on the strip and take te free trams behind the hotels....easier to get around..alot of walking invloved..so it helps...central would be Bally`s,Flamino Hilton,Babary Coast,Imperial Palace,Treasure Island,Mirage, and Harrah`s..try Imp.Pal. or Barbary Coast for prices...usually pretty good ...BC has no pool but is okay otherwise and IP has a pool and good prices too...stay away from Holiday Inn Boardwalk...try cheapovegas.com for some honest hotel reviews...lvol.com...have a good time regardless...

Try Harrah's

They have $89 rates for weekends in August and it's right in the middle of all the big new hotels like the Venetian, Bellagio, etc.

check their website for the code.

Rey:

Plan your days carefully. Price depends on day of week and what's going on in town (conventions etc.). Baring conventions Sunday through Thursday bargains abound. You can stay at great hotels for $50 to $100 per night more or less. The week before Memorial day we stayed at the adequate Sahara for $37 per night and the 5 star Treasure Island for $69 per night. Add 9% tax and at some hotels an "energy surcharge". Rates double and triple on weekends and when major events are going on. And, you may not be able to get a decent room at all at any price. On Saturday Memorial day weekend Treasure Island wanted $240 and Luxor $279. Most hotels have their own website where you can easily get rates and book. Or you can find listings on Expedia, Travelocity, HRN etc. Its usually cheaper to book through the hotel web site. But not always. The hotel rates are like airline fares. They change constantly. If you wait till the next day the same room may be $30 more or may be $10 less or may no longer be available. This seems to depend on how close to or far from they are getting to full. It's a gamble just like everything else in that town. Got to know when to hold em and when to fold em.... If you just show up in town without a reservation and ask for a room, you're likely to get laughed at and will pay the regular rack rate(very high) if you can get a room at all. There are always motels but their prices also jump all over the place and you miss the true Las Vegas hotel experience. I recommend the former Mirage properties as the class acts and the best(Mirage, Treasure Island and downtown located Golden Nugget).

Good Luck and enjoy your trip.

A little known jewel for the budget minded is Casino Royale, it sits ON THE STRIP directly across from Mirage/Treasure Island, you can't beat the location. Totally remodeled in last 2 years. Denny's restaurant on site. Venetian directly north, Harrahs directly South! The pool is wet, but not a lush tropical garden setting, mind you. How important is that to you?

Stayed at the Circus Circus two years ago for $38 a night. 2 queen beds, and a very nice, large room. I was expecting something very very basic for the price, and was pleasantly surprised. The room was beautiful.

Check the Hotel Specials from the LA Times on this site, the rates usually include some sort of perk or add-on but they are very reasonable. Just visit

I agree that the San Remo is another jewel, WITH a great tropical pool setting!

Rey, I'm taking you at your word: inexpensive, quiet, not interested in gambling but want to see The Strip.

Just queried the Best Western Parkview Motel (a short drive to The Strip), no casino; has a pool, $49/night for a queen on Friday, 8/24 for 2 people. That's without the tax which will be added.
Here's the website I found it at:

http://www.lasvegasnv.alwayshotels.com/

There are cheaper places and you can likely stay on The Strip at SOME casino/hotel BUT since you're not interested in gambling and specified quiet I'm suggested the above as an alternative.
Here's another website on LV. Casino Boy writes in a somewhat outrageous, but humorous, style but does reviews on the hotels (downtown and on The Strip) with his personal recommendations.

Good luck and I wish you a most pleasant trip.

End of August: expect HOT weather, but it's a 'dry' heat.

Stayed at Treasure Island last January for $59/night. Great hotel and very nicely located in the center of the strip. My trip report is at
