Looking for a hotel room with a little more square footage than the average NYC hotel. Which hotels have big rooms (500sq/ft +)? I'm not looking for a suite, just a good sized room in a 4 or 5 star hotel.

Funny, we always ask this when we book rooms too, it's an important part of our hotel room choice. If I was more entreprenural, I'd come up with a travel web site with the following:

-When hotel was built
-When hotel was renovated
-Square footage of rooms.

Let me know what you find out!

I think you will have a hard time finding anything that large that isn't a suite. My 1 bedroom apartment is just over 600 sq feet. I'm sure if you can find something that big you will pay dearly. I would guess most rooms average 250-350 sq ft.

If having a huge room is important to you, either book something at the really upscale places(Ritz, Plaza, Waldorf) or look into NJ. Good luck.

We once stayed at the New York Palace, then a Helmsley, and got a corner room on the NorthWest corner. Those rooms are huge if they will confirm one, as they did for us based on a friend's suggestion.

We have stayed in many four and five star hotels in New York, but never splurge for a suite, and most of the rooms are pretty small. In all honesty one of our favorites is the Marriott Marquis. While the rooms aren't huge, but bigger than most -- they are well laid out, have wall to wall, floor to ceiling glass, a sofa plus chair and ottoman, desk, armoire, and king size bed. They are among my favorite New York hotel rooms -- if only we didn't have to deal with the elevator lines.

I don't know if you might be interested in this one but we stayed recently at the Bentley Hotel on the upper east side and I was really pleasantly surprised at the size of the room - for 125.00 a night! Room 407. I cannot tell you about the square footage because I am just not up on those sorts of details However, there was a living room, separate bedroom, and the bathroom. Living room was spacious with a couch and a sort of love seat thingy - centre table, TV and a larger round table for dining/working at and a large closet with ironing board/lots of hangers. Bedroom was off of the living room (separated by a glass door) and had a large king sized bed. Bathroom was average size I guess with a deep soak tub/shower stall. Not much of a vanity area but we survived. The location of the hotel is not the best for some - it is a bit away from the action of NYC and the closest subway is quite a hike away at Lexington and 59th. But we did not mind that - we enjoyed the neighbourhood and took cabs when we were too lazy to walk to the subway.

The standard rooms are very large at Le Parker Meridien (the largest of any we've seen in NYC). If you book ahead, the weekend rate is $189. We stayed last time with Hotwire for much less. Upon check-in, we were offered a suite for another $35. Worth every penny. Huge room, great views! Location is excellent.

Try the Manhattan East Suite Hotels. All of their hotels (The Surry, Southgate Towers, and many more) are converted appartments.

Flatotel advertises itself as having the largest hotel rooms in NYC. I've never been there, so I can't confirm that, but you can check out the reviews of previous guests on www.newyork.citysearch.com and decide for yourself. It's located in a very central location. You could always call and ask them about square footage.

The rooms I've had at the Marriott Marquis have been large, but not 500 square feet. I once had a corner suite there once, and it was just about 500 square feet. That was a free upgrade on a Priceline reservation for $100, by the way.

I've had both large (but not 500 square feet) and very small rooms at the Waldorf.

Also take a look at the Millennium Hotel UN Plaza. My wife and I stayed there earlier this year, and our room seemed pretty large. It was quite a lovely place to spend a weekend. It's on the east side. half a block from the UN; not the 'heart' of the action, but it's an easy walk to restaurants and subway, and you can always get a cab at the hotel entrance. The Millennium often has weekend deals, so check their Web site or the Times' Travel section. Don't confuse this hotel with the Millennium Broadway at Times Square; altho I haven't stayed at the Millennium Broadway, I understand the one at UN Plaza is nicer.

I second Patrick's opinion of the Marriott Marquis: definitely large rooms with a king or 2 queens and great views if you request an upper floor. The size of the place, elevator lines and Times Square location drive me crazy though.

While the standard rooms at the Parker Meridien are not large, the junior suites are not much more expensive and are a nice size (though the bathrooms are minute). Be aware that the 2-bedded ones have doubles not queens though. This hotel has a GREAT location.

Never stayed at them, but several all-suite places come to mind: the Benjamin, the Doubletree Suites at Times Square and the Flatotel (already mentioned).

Is there a particular reason you specifically don't want a suite? If not, check out the Marriott Rihga Royal. The location is convenient to Central Park, the theater dist. and 5th AVe. shopping, and the rooms are spectacular.

Take a look at the Michelangelo - their "studio" is $260/night - up to 500 sq. ft. Large bedroom plus sitting room.

Here's a 2nd for the Michelangelo, a very nice smaller hotel at the corner of W. 51st and 7th. We had a "junior suite" there earlier this month - approx. 500 sq.ft included nice sized bedroom, comfortable sitting area, and two bathrooms - for $260. Not sure why you'd want a larger room as opposed to a suite.

I second the recommendation for the Manhattan East Suites. We stayed there in April and were very pleased.

They are all over town and the rooms are huge. Pricey because they're suites, but if you are traveling with several people, it is worth it. The suites are actually two separate rooms unlike some "suites" which are the usual dinky rooms with a screen at one end to hide the sofa. You also get a kitchenette in case some members of your group get up earlier than others.
