I'm planning a summer (May or August) long weekend for 6 adults and 3 babies. Which Lake Erie communities would you recommend that I explore? We would probably like access to a pool and perhaps a beach as well. We do most of our dining in the rental property but would also enjoy "town" as well for shopping and dining. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Lake Erie summer rental--which area?

I'm partial to Kelley's Island http://www.kelleysisland.com/ but it may be a tad too remote. Not sure what kind of luck you'll have anywhere w/a pool that time of year. (If you choose May).
Sounds like Put-in-Bay is just the place for you! You can catch ferry's from Port Clinton or Catawba. Leave your car in the parking lot in Port Clinton and board the Jet Express. Once you arrive just walk to the golf carts and rent one to take you to your hotel. A goft cart is all you will need for the weekend to travel the island. http://www.pibinfo.com/ferryboats.html
Check out this hotel in Put-in-bay, it has the setting I think you want: http://www.bayshoreresortpib.com/
You can even catch a ferry to Kelly's for an afternoon if you wish. Again, just rent a goft cart to get around that island also. So much fun!
If you plan on swimming in the lake, I would suggest you go in August. Its still pretty cold in May. I like Put in Bay over Kelly's Island. You can watch the grass grow on Kelly's Island for entertainment. There's a few things to do in Put in Bay. You might also check some of the "mainland" beach areas of Ohio or even Presque Isle in PA (Erie, PA)
In lieu of renting a golf cart, it will actually be much cheaper to take your own vehicle over. Just make sure it is gassed up. If you go in the Summer, Put-in-Bay = party on the lake, Kelley's = R & R. Having frequented both in my youth, & adult life.
It might be cheaper to take your car, but not nearly as much fun! We go to the Islands every year and one of the reasons is to tour around on the carts, unless in May it might be cold.
I'm not sure of the going rates but I believe the cost of bringing your car over is the equivalent of buying maybe 3 or 4 hours of golf cart rental. Cars to Kelley's (& back) are around $14. Golf carts usually run about $8-10/hour. My money can be better spent at The Pump.
