I haven't been to VA Beach but..... help us out here - be a bit more specific! Are you looking for quiet, quaint, romantic..... for rugged countryside..... water..... no water?
I posted awhile back for romantic wknd suggestions within two hrs of DC and two out of three suggested Oxford MD on eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. It sounds totally kewl - town goes back to 1660 - small, not touristy and lots of history. I have found a good deal on very unusual accomodations - will be there Aug 14 - 17. E-mail if you want more infor but perhaps by narrowing focus you may find others w/good ideas to share.
If the drive is part of the "event", one of the most beautiful that I have done is to Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains by way of Gettysburg, PA and then south. I was shocked at how magnificent the farmlands and vistas were all the way down to Charlottesville. The Charlottesville area is wonderful. Mountains, plantations, wineries, vistas, and a great college town (UVA) to hang out in. No beach, but a worthwhile destination nonetheless.
