LABOR DAY IN SOUTH BEACH

My friend and I have booked Labor Day weekend in South Beach a while ago. I has just found out that it will the NABB bikers weekend there. Has anybody been there during this time? What kind of crowd is there? We are not into the urban/hip hop crowd. (was there for that by mistake a few years back and had to cut the vac. short) We enjoy classy, upscale lounges (i.e Delano)Any feedback will be greatly appreciated as we are looking to possibly changing the weekend if we can or cancel.

Labor Day weekend will be a very crowded time in South Beach, along with other beaches and attractions in Florida.

Okay, just did a search.

First question; How old are you? If it is anything like the trashy crowd Myrtle Beach gets, avoid like the plague.

These are basically college aged kids who party like hell and clog traffic.

For more information:

www.BlackBeachWeek.com

It would be very similar to vacationing in Destin or South Padre Island over Spring Break.

On the other hand, if you have a bike and are twenty something, go and you'll have a great time.

I would either change the weekend or head up to Ft.Lauderdale or stay on Biscayne Bay (Mandarin Oriental).

When you have to go to Ft. Lauderdale for classy, you are in big trouble.

Sounds like you are setting yourself up to be unhappy, dlp. Maybe you should just cancel. It's a specific type of event and if you think that will prevent you from lounging at the Delano, you should probably cancel.

MikeT, lots of great places in Ft. Lauderdale. I don't know where you've been hanging out lately but FLL is a great place.

We are both in our late 20's, but do not enjoy the urban/hip hop crowd that may be associated with the black bikers weekend. We have been there before and had a great time when there was not a specific event going on. We like to party with the "normal" south beach crowd and the upscale/trendy places.

As I said, it sounds like you've already decided you are going to be unhappy. Time to cancel. No big deal, unless you are going to lose a lot of money.

Please define "normal" South Beach crowd...If you go to the "usual upscale" places wouldn't you run into the "normals"??

normal must mean "non Hip-Hop biker" but instead "loud dance music classy" whatever that is.

dlp, there really isn't a 'normal' South Beach crowd.

Ages from wealthy 20 somethings to 50 somethings from South America, Europe, and the US. After all, Miami is considered the northernmost South American city.

R&B is HUGE in South Beach so you'll find that everywhere.

R & B is not HUGE in South Beach. I've lived here for the last 10 years and R&B can be found only at a few clubs, or more commonly played Memorial Weekend. I would reccommend not to come to South Beach Memorial Weekend or Labor Day Weekend, a majority of the locals leave the beach and therefore these holiday crowds are not typical of what you would enjoy about South Beach during a normal week. These holiday weekend crowds became especially popular due to the E Channel, the Travel Channel, Will Smith's famous song and certain talent promoters from other cities who are not from Miami. South Florida and especially South Beach is known for its famous house/trance scene which has attracted DJs from around the world, especially during the Winter Music Conference in March, in my opinion the best time to come to South Beach. This is the first time the NABB is coming to South Beach so nobody knows what to expect, I would avoid Ocean Drive, Collins and Washington areas and stay mostly around the Lincoln Road area if you want to experience true South Beach lifestyle. Labor Day has typically not been too crowded, especially since it usually rains every day or there are hurricanes coming through, plus its hot and humid as hell and the water is warm and merky with slimy seaweed and jelly fish in the water that sting you...have fun.

Jmaxwell, click on the message boards at the above website I gave.

The weekend has gathered momentum and if you don't think it will be huge, think again.

The same thinking is what caught South Beach off guard Memorial Weekend 2001 when they were only expecting 10,000 and ended up with 250,000. I know because I was there.

MikeT, and where do you live, hmmmm? That is a pretty nasty comment about FLL, I live here and don't need to defend FLL from know nothings.

There are lots of reasons to like FLL, but the pursuit of classy isn't one of them. It's a city of endless strip malls with two blocks of high-end retail/restaurants.
