what to see in a week right after Christmas? I'd like to spend 2 days in LA then see more coastal sites. In LA, we love the theater and coastal how far away are Redwoods, Yosemite? First vacation to CA - what shouldn't we miss? My daughter loves the ocean, what is best beach? Thanks

How much time do you have altogether? Just a week? Are you flying in and out of Los Angeles, or have you not bought tickets yet?
FYI, visiting Yosemite in late December could mean driving in snow and needing chains on the car tires. Are you comfortable with that? Have you checked lodging availability inside the Park for that week? It may already be scarce for that week.
Best beach in late December? Best as in weather? There is no guarantee of good weather, but I think your chances are better in San Diego. FYI, water temps in December will be too cold (upper 50s F.) for swimming without a wet suit. If by 'best' you mean atmosphere, consider also Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara or one of the beach towns in Los Angeles.
I agree with Jean, there are many points to take into consideration especially due to the period you plan on traveling in.
However, if it is only one week and it must be after xmas I would recommend making plans based on 2 or 3 types of weather so that you can alternate between options if necessary.
Wising you a safe and a happy trip

Redwood National Forest is at the northern most part of the state and probably too far given you want to spend time in LA. At the south end of Yosemite (about 6 hours away) you'll find The Mariposa Grove, which contains giant sequoias. See my pics http://ahpinc.smugmug.com/gallery/5546522_Pcr9f#!i=339795347&k=7ioRC
Two of my favorite places along the coast are Carmel with it's beautiful white sand beach and the 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. (They're on the coast - west and a bit south of Yosemite.) So you could go up to Yosemite, head over to the coast, see Carmel and come down the California's Pacific Coast Highway. http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/road-trips/california-pacific-coast-road-trip/
I also love San Diego - it's a nice walking city and you can take a train from LA. If you go to Coronado Island you'll see Hotel Del Coronado which is where "Some Like it Hot" was filmed. (I'm uploading my pics to http://ahpinc.smugmug.com/American-Holiday-Planner/California/San-Diego/ )
If you like Irish Pubs (and your daughter will be 21 by then), the best Irish Pub I've found in the US is in San Diego - The Field.
