La Quinta-restuarants and activities

I am going to a conference at La Quinta resort this January. I have some free time and would like to get out of the resort. Are there good restaurants nearby? And to walk off the meals, are there any nearby parks or outdoor activities? How does one get around without a car?

David,

Every La Quinta I have ever seen did not have a restaurant or a resort feel.

Could this be somewhere special that you want a lot of information about , while still keeping it's location a SECRET?

The La Quinta resort is a great place to stay. But you're not going to find much within walking distance. There are walking trails along the mountain range that you might want to check out. As for restaurants, there are some small family style restaurants in town and then the expensive ones where you're staying. For much else to choose from in terms of shopping or restaurants, you'd have to go to Palm Desert. While close by, it's not within walking distance.

I'm sure the hotel will be able to provide you with info on activities that you could do in the area.

Do you mean La Quinta in Palm Springs?? If so, it's a beautiful resort with a spa, tennis, golf and fitness center. Should be easy to get some exercise. The resort is rather isolated in the valley--it might be worth it to rent a car, although there are taxis. Some good restaurants at the resort and many in the rest of the Palm Springs area. Check Indian Well, Palm Desert, Ranch Mirage as well as Palm Springs itself.

I've stayed at a La Quinta on Ulmereton Rd in St. Petersburg, Florida. The room rate a $49 a night was good because it included breakfast.

Although, it doesn't compare to the breakfast at the Hampton Inn.

All the good places to eat are nearby. Red Lobster, Denny's, Hardee's.

La Quinta Resort is NOTHING like regular chain La Quintas! It is fantasttic. Frank Capra did some of his writing there. We loved the dining there. If I had the budget I would never eat out of the resort!!! It is quite luxurious. some of the rooms have their own private pool.

One thought, David, maybe there are tours going here but maybe you would need to rent a car just for the day, but the Joshua Tree Monument is a fantastic experience and January is prime time to see it. Great hiking there and a unique place. You could also take the aerial tram up to the top of San Jacinto and see snow possibly in So. Cal. I'm sure if you ask the concierge at La Quinta they'll be able to help. Do have a meal in the Mexican restaurant--think it's the Adobe Cafe?

gail,
I didn't know that the La Qunita Motor Inn's had a resort! Bet they don't have the $49 AARP rate that I got in Florida.

I prefer the Hampton's Inn locations because they have better breakfasts. Do you know if they have a reort?

The restaurants at the hotel are Morgan's, for more casual dining, the Adobe Grill, for upscale southwestern, and Montanas, for fine dining. There are several very good restaurants in the village near the hotel, including Tibo's and La Quinta Grill. For good, inexpensive Mexican and italian, try El Ranchito and Ciro's. A couple miles away at Hwy 111 and Washington Street you will find the ambiance heavy Cliff House, a Rubio's (fish tacos/Mexican) and a newly-opened Falls Steakhouse (the other one is in Palm Springs). I would not call the hotel "isolated." It is only a couple miles from the main east-west commercial corridor, Highway 111. In nearby Indian Wells there are also many restaurants, including the excellent Scirocco at the Renaissance hotel and Le St. Germaine at 111 and Cook Street. Then, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage. A good spot is the new PF Chang's at The River in Rancho Mirage. In all, there are a TON of great places, all within an easy ten to fifteen minutes of the La Quinta hotel.

For hiking, there are nice walks on and around the hotel grounds. You can also arrange for jeep tours that will pick you up at the hotel itself.

Check out the Cucina Pasta/Adriatic Room restaurant in Palm Desert. A casual, hole-in-the-wall kind of place with great Ital/Yugo food. My fave, we used to live in the area and visit yearly.
The La Quinta is one of those ultimate luxury places, expensive, hot-and-cold running bellboys with their hands out, great golf course.
