La Quinta Inn near Providence airport and WATERFIRE

I just need a one night stay near the Providence airport next Saturday. I'm picking up a friend on Sunday and continuing north from there
How's the La Quinta inn there? I've never stayed at one. A lot of the other hotels in the area are booked or have much higher rates. Also, is it possible to drive into Providence and park somewhere near enough to where Waterfire is going on? I figure that as long as I'm in the area I might as well try it. Is the traffic going in to Providence that night going to be really bad? How much time should I allow to drive in and park?

Traffic isn't that bad. I mean, it can get ugly during rush hour during the week, but it's really not big enough of a city for traffic to be unbearable. Then again, I lived in NYC and Chicago after Providence, so perhaps I'm biased.

There are parking garages and lots nearby, as well as street parking, though truthfully street parking may be tough to come by right near the river. From the airport, Providence is like a 20 minute drive, maybe 30-45 if there's traffic. No need to take a cab unless you plan on drinking.

TwoFatFeet, assuming I allow about a half hour to drive in, do I need to budget much extra time to find parking and walking to the river? I realize that this is an evening long event, so its not as if I have to catch the opening of a show at a specific time

Anyone else know anything about the hotel?

No need to budget a ton of time to walk from parking. It's a compact area. I guess I should note that I haven't been there to hang out in a long time, say three years or so. But when I lived there parking wasn't much of a problem. You just may have to pay for lot or garage parking.

That map may help. Providence Place is a huge mall with a big parking garage. I used to park at the lot on Steeple Street and Main Street, or the lot by the Courtyard by Marriott on Memorial Drive. They are both right near where they do Waterfire.

How long are you staying in Providence? Just for the night? A couple of hours? Were I taking you there, I'd stroll up the hill on Waterman Street to Thayer Street. There are some happenings on Thayer. It's where Brown University and RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) are situated. Cool, fun, young area, decent nightlife and a couple of good places to eat.

Interesting that you've posted a Providence query ... kind of taking a trip down memory lane for me, haha.

TwoFatFeet, Yes, I'll just be in the area overnight.I was in Providence a few years ago (walked around Brown and RISD, ate at Federal Hill, etc) but was never around when Waterfire was on. I'll be there on the right day this time, so it seems worth a shot.
Not too many Providence area people on the board,I guess

Don't know anything about La Quinta, but when I go to Waterfire I try to get there a bit early (around 5 or latest 6) and can usually find street parking on South Main St, or if not S. Main, I'll go up the hill on College St 1/2 way to Benefit St. turn right, and then park on one of the side streets going down the hill (make sure you put on the emergency brake LOL!). 5-10 minute walk to the river.

As it gets closer to dusk, it is hard to park on the street, but as TwoFatFeet said, you can park in a garage or lot. I like being near the end of the river near Hemenways' restaurant, as opposed to the side near Providence Place.

It is a great event, enjoy!

nyer,
I looked up the La Quinta in RI and read some pretty positive reviews. Whenever I go to the Waterfire, I park in the Providence Place Mall parking garage. the first 3 hours cost $1...$5 for the 4th hour, which is still a bargain. The mall is right across the street from the river, and there's plenty of restaurants in the mall if you decide to get a bite to eat. Hope this helps.
