Kona airport, Big Island, with no car for 3 1/2 hrs. Anything to do to pass the time?
This is our first trip to the Big Island [flying into Kona], and we had a reservation months ago. Our flight was just changed and now gets in almost four hrs. earlier, but I've discovered that our rental car will not be available till the original time. Is there anything close enough to the airport that we could easily get to, to make use of that time?

I'm going to work on changing companies. I had gotten a good rate, as I had a coupon from the Entertainment book I had ordered for Hawaii. Will have to give it a try. It dawned on me that it's not really an option to head anywhere, as we'll all have our luggage.

Check out Hawaii Discount Car rental. We got a good rate from them in October. I can't imagine sitting at the Kona airport for 4 hours. It's a very small, open-air airport, with a few small shops.

Unless you have prepaid for the car,you should be able to cancel with no problem. We had trouble with the airlines changing flight times, it could happen again - don't be surprised if it does.

Just cancel the rental car reservation and re-book it for an earlier arrival. Try www.kayak.com. I got some great rates from them. There is no shortage of rental cars in Kona (KOA), and it is ludicrous to sit for 3 1/2 hours there.

I know that this is a really old thread, however, if any reads this in the future, I wanted to say that I took a trip up to the airport to visit the Ellison Onizuka Museum. It was well worth visiting. So, if anyone does find themselves with extra time at the airport, or a drive to the airport, I would recommend seeing this museum.
