3 days would be excessive for me and your touring options are probably 2 days. If you aren't in Alaska for a couple weeks, I would move on with the max of 2 nights in that area.
We stayed in Palmer for 3 nights but two full days were spent at a local event. I loved Alaska's Garden Gate B&B. We took the largest room so we could have a kitchenette and in case there were 4 of us instead of 2. Karen cooks a marvelous breakfast. She had her house built to be a B&B so the living room is huge. Her two house huskies add a nice Alaskan touch. We enjoyed Independence Mine and then headed north to Talkeetna. Unfortunately we had to miss a local plow-up day which would have been fun for my husband who loves old tractors. Her website has info on activities in the area. I think Budget Queen in right that maybe 3 days is too long(we had 3 weeks in Alaska) but it depends on your plans. Despite 3 weeks in Alaska we did not go to Denali but we spent more time on the Kenai Peninsula and enjoyed an overnight in Seldovia as well as the longest Kenai Fjords tour out of Seward. I planned our trip around several events we wanted to attend, ending with the 4th of July parade in Kenai and a dinner show featuring Hobo Jim. I would take a look at the local events that might be taking place during August.
Hi, there are three companies which take air boats to the Knik Glacier: Hunter Creek Adventures (www.knikglacier.com), Mt. View Knik Glacier Airboat Tours (www.mtviewrvpark.com), and Knik Glacier Adventures. I've been out with the first two companies and can say they're wonderful. There's also Alaska Backcountry Adventure Tours (www.youralaskavacation.com). He has ATV tours that go to the face of the glacier, up the same Knik River. The boats were exciting but noisy. The ATV tour takes longer but you get to see a lot more wildlife and habitat. The Knik Glacier is an underappreciated area in Alaska--it's a rare place to go from brackish and anadronous (spawning) areas to alpine so quickly which makes it the kind of place where you can see salmon spawning, then tundra swans, then moose, then mountain goats, then bears, all within the span of a couples miles on an ATV. I had thought that since I can see the Knik Glacier out my windows at home that it was pretty close, but by ATV it was actually 21 miles to the face of the massive ice, where they shot the Star Trek movie. I took my 60 y.o. mom on that trip while she was here last summer. It's been hot here the past 2 summers so in the afternoons the streams really swell from glacier runoff. It was a little challenging to put our feet up on the handlebars and drive through the rivers, but the ATVs can go anywhere and Craig is an amazing guide. The boats are less of a challenge but less of a zooming thrill, too, than the ATVs. You can also flightsee over the Knik Glacier (which makes Whitter "overland, over the glaicer, only a skip from Palmer) but it's pretty great to actually be out in it by boat or ATV.
