I'm looking for recommendations for a resort in a warm place with pools and a beach that would be suitable for small children. We've been to Disney World, so I'd prefer to avoid that and find something more low-key. I'm thinking about trying something in the Clearwater/St. Pete area of Florida (e.g. the Radisson-Clearwater or the Tradewinds). Does anybody have any opinions? Are there any other cities or regions
that warrant consideration? We're planning a trip in mid-October.

The Amelia Island Plantation is very family orienated resort, 30 minutes north of Jacksonville, FL. An extensive kids program, beach, pool, and very relaxing. I live on the island and own a restaurant just down the road. The plantation has a good reputation with families. The phone # is (904)261-6161. Any other questions just e-mail me. Good Luck. Oh yeah--this resort has some great golf courses.
Captiva Island: (between Sarasota & Naples) FL has South Seas Plantation which has a lovely beach, wild life preserve and marine sanctuary on the bay side of the key (dolphins, manatees, bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, etc) all the amenities you could want plus a good kids program. Kid's love the Bubble Room restaurant down the street.
A great family vacation at the beach would be at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida. It is very family oriented. It is a beautiful hotel with a great beach, great pool , children's program, and lovely rooms. We were there in June and loved it and will definitely plan a return trip. They have reasonable rates in the off-season. Also, Naples is a really nice town, very quiet and relaxing-nice place to take kids.
Sanibel Island is lovely off the coast of Ft. Meyers. I'd avoid the entire atlantic coast...too many people.
