Keys, especially Key West and Key West Golf Resortd

Jump to last reply

I will be vacationing in Key West in early July with my husband and sons (ages 17 and 18). We will have access to a car for the vacation.
My accomodations are at the Key West Golf Resort. We enjoy water activities and are looking to experience the flavor of the Keys.
Please provide info on the resort, prime activites in Key West, and "be sure not to miss" locations north of Key West that would be within a one hour drive...Thanks!!!

For your sons the "prime activity" by which they "experience the flavor of the Keys" may well be hanging out downtown (near Duval) in the evening. Not sure how the geography (where's the resort and who has the car keys) will play into this.

An hour north of Key West puts you in the launch area for snorkel trips to Looe Key, which I (and other posters) recommend very highly. You can go from Ramrod Key, Big Pine, or Bahia Honda. In addition Bahia Honda has a nice beach, nicer than Key West in my opinion.

There are all sorts of sailing and/or snorkeling and/or fishing charters out of Key West.

    Hi Carol

Just got back from the Key West on Monday. Our first time and we LOVED it. I traveled with a 5,8 and 14 year old. I am not familiar with the Golf Resort, but am assuming it is on Stock Island on the Golf Course. The only bad thing about this location, is that it is, most likely next to "Mt. Trashmore" the garbage dump and the correctional facility - far enough away though where you probably won't be affected.

We snorkeled with Strike Zone Charters out of Big Pine to Looe Key. I highly recommend them. I dive and was impressed with the snorkeling at the spots on the reef we were taken to. They do snorkel only trips so the depth is great for snorkelers of all levels. Take an AM trip, it's usually calmer. Call them when you get there and they will tell you what the marine forecast is for the time period you will be there and go when it's good - the reef is 6 miles out next to the gulf stream and it can get choppy.

Try Smathers Beach on Key West for the kids - my 14 year old loved it - volleyball, food vendors, parasailing, which the 14 and 8 year old did. For a more quiet beach, go to Fort Zachary Taylor, but my 14 year old was bored here. Didn't make it back up to Bahia Honda, the kids didn't want to be in the car for an hour after thr drive from Michigan.

Parking was not a problem for us, even with my Yukon XL. ALWAYS plenty of parking on Caroline Street, which intersects Duvall near the action. Try it before the overpriced lots.

Look into Seaplanes of Key West for a trip to the Dry Tortugas. It's expensive but worth every penny if you are water lovers. See the posts on this board.

Have a GREAT time. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did - I'm a St. John lover, but now I can't wait to go back!!
