Key West guesthouse or hotel, close to Duval in a good area?
I've read lots of great reviews about Eden House on this board, and so far it's my top pick for an upcoming trip. But a few posters have made it sound like its location (Fleming Street east of Duval) is too close to Bahama Village. Can anyone tell me if it's in a safe area? We DEFINITELY plan to be walking around late at night.
We'd like to be near Duval Street and semi-convenient to a beach. Don't mind walking a few blocks or even a half-mile. Any other recommendations would be helpful!

Okay, a second look at a map may have just answered my own question. I realized Petronia Street actually spans Key West. So the farther north on Duval you are, the safer I'd assume the area is?
Also, am I right in guessing that Bahama Village would qualify more as "sketchy" than "dangerous"?

You are correct. Not only north but you are way west too which is fine. Remember Key West is only three square miles. Daytime walking is fine everywhere. Bahama Village is basically lower income area so use your judgement. During the day its fine. If you are uncofortable at night don't go thru there. There isn't much there anyway at night other than a few restaurants.
On a different note may I recommend Seven Fish Restaurant, it is great for seafood but very small so reservations are a must. Breakfast at Sara Beth's is fantastic.

The location of the Eden House isn't remotely dangerous, but it's not necessarily convenient either, especially to a beach. (Hopefully you've read about beaches in the keys...they're all man-made). Check out the map at http://keywest.com/newbigmap.gif
and look at the far lower left corner for Ft. Zachary Taylor, which is the best beach in Key West.

Mary, thanks for calrifying. And I'll look up the restaurants you mentioned!
Susan, thanks for the beach rec. I do know Key West is not a "beach destination" per se...we're going for laziness, pirates, margaritas, and key lime pie!

Mary -- I am 100% planning to go to Bahama Village! My parents lived in the Bahamas for several years, so I've been to the Bahamas several times and love 'em (even though that's a faux pas on this board, apparently). I'll definitely try Blue Heaven, since I've heard about it from everywhere. I just want to book a hotel outside that area, since we do plan on walking around very late at night and I've heard it can be sketchy -- although I know that's a REALLY relative term!
