Key West at Christmas time

Planning trip at Christmas for our family (Husband and me, 21 yr old, 19 yr old, 16 yr old). We have done Turks and Caicos, Playa del Carmen, and Jamaica in the past. I have always wanted to go to Key West. Wondering if anyone can comment on weather and general scene there in December. Realize it won't be as warm as the Carribean.

Weather can be anything. The one time we were there on New Year's Eve it was 55 and raining. I can tell you, however, that it'll be really busy, and prices of accommodations will be hiked, so if I were you I'd go ahead and make reservations.

It is NOT a place you go to to "lie around on the beaches" but rather, you lie by the pool.

Dukey makes a good point. Key West is not a beach destination. In fact 99% of the beaches in the keys are man-made with imported sand. Having said that, Key West is our favorite vacation destination, and we have spent between 4 and 6 weeks a year there for the past 20 years. I wouldn't want our one bad weather experience to influence you, as that's not the norm for Key West. I do think, though, that you should make plans as early as possible, because that's a prime time for visitors.

Yes I already feel behind schedule on making holiday plans. Any particular area we should look to stay in or to avoid? thanks...

My 2 cents; you didn't say how long you'd be there, I think your teens will be bored if longer than a 3 day weekend. If the weather isn't good, not much for them to do. I didn't know about the lack of beaches when I went, albeit a long time ago, and was very disappointed to see what they were like.

I'd definitely stay in Old Town. That way you'll be within walking distance of tourist activities, sunset celebrations, great restaurants, etc., etc. And I'll have to disagree with DebitNM (even though I've seen those wonderful posts forever), because there are endless water activities for your children. Jet skis, scuba, snorkeling, parasailing, and more.

And now I'm wishing I hadn't mentioned the cool 55 degrees, because it certainly wasn't normal weather for Key West. I was only trying to make a point that it could be anything. Good luck! If you need more info, I'm available.
