Ketchikan: How to get to Totem Bight State Park on your own?

I know there's a public bus that runs to the Totem Bight State Park, but, unfortunately, it's not running on Sunday when we will be in Ketchikan. Anyone know of other ways to get there without needing to join a tour group or renting a car? Would a cab be too expensive since the driver has to wait for you? We like to explore on our own and take our time, and hence do not like to join a tour.

Is there a bus route that drops you close to the park and we can walk the rest of the way?

Thanks!

Actually, without the bus running on the weekend, how do local people get to the park on supposedly their time off? Is it assumed that all locals must have a car??

Unfortunately you are very limited on how to get there. It's 10 miles from downtown on a road that has very little sidewalk. Renting a car here is astronomical. If you knew a local here it may be your best bet. As far as a cab goes it may be your next best option as they "sometimes" will cut you a break, but I wouldn't count on it.

The closest the bus will get you is Wal-Mart which is still 6 miles from your destination. Most locals do have cars here as this island is 35 miles long from South to North roadwise. Those that don't; have friends or do a lot of walking.
