I recently posted a message about visiting Makers Mark Bourbon distillery in Bardstown, KY and received great advice. However, due to the same great advice I have decided to extend my visit in Kentucky to include the Lexington area. I have read about a few more bourbon distilleries in the area such as Labrot & Graham, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, and 4 Roses. Of course, the guidebooks all give them rave reviews. I was wondering what the "truth" is from the participants of this forum about these sights. Also, any advice on what would be the best way or route to include scenic driving along the way to these distilleries? Thanks.

The Frankfort/Lexington area is so beautiful. We like Wild Turkey distillery near Lawrenceburg a lot. We last visited before last year's Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. I had my 17 year old son and 3 of his friends with me and they loved the tour. At the end they allowed them to fill their pockets with free sample bottles!
Other great places to visit in Frankfort are the new Kentucky history museum, the capitol building (one of the most beautiful in the US), and the Frankfort cemetery where Daniel Boone's grave is among many other historical monuments overlooking the river.
Depending on when you'll be in Lexington you might want to check out the Red Mile harness track. Some very fast harness horses there.
Be sure to take the scenic drives around Paris and Lexington, beautiful horse farms and old rock walls.
Have a great time!
Thanks for the tips!
Bill, Bardstown is a lovely town, rich in Kentucky history. One of the greatest treats I have ever done is take the Old Kentucky Dinner Train excursion in Bardstown. Lunch & Dinner trips are available, I believe Tuesday thru Saturday. You may visit the website at www.kydinnertrain.com for prices, menu, etc. The whole experience is 2 hours, one of the things you see on the ride is a distillery & the beautiful countryside..definitely worth the trip!!
