Kenai Peninsula Itinerary

Spending 10 days in Alaska this summer with a trip up to Denali. I plan to spend some time on the Kenai peninsula. Just wondering on how much time to spend there. Should I stay in Seward and Homer or stick to one or the other.

With 10 days, I would consider going up to Fairbanks and perhaps make a loop? 2 nights in each Fairbanks and Denail Park, with an add night in Talkeetna if interested. Then perhaps a night in Copper Center- can fly into Kennicott for mine tour, overnight in Valdez, ferry over to Whitter, drive to Seward- 2 days is usually enough. A necessary reference is THE MILEPOST, take out all the Alaska travel books at your library, request each area's visitor guide. Homer is certainly worth while a and with 10 days, 2 nights there too??

I would recommend two nights in Homer, one in Seward. Homer offers a wide variety of tours and activities. It is comparable to Norway. A neighbor who used to be an int. airline pilot said Homer was one of the ten most beautiful places he'd ever seen. Kenai and Soldotna are home to the Kenai river, where the King Salmon are sought after. Last summer, our temps were quite warm, many days in the lower 80's, gorgeous for camping, fishing, biking, etc. Seward offers a glacier, but is home to cruise ships, and is quite compact, so much more foot traffic, though the drive there from Anchorage is spectacular. The lower peninsula should not be missed, and we're much less mosquito infested than up north. Enjoy your trip. You may want to check out Lands End Resort, it's at the tip of the Homer spit, and Alaskan Suites online site. They are both popular. J.

Last May we went to Homer-2 nights with 1 night stop over in Soldatna, then Seward 3 nights, and then Denali 3 nights. Camped out all nights. Both Homer and Seward were great but I liked Seward better than Homer but depends on personal preference. The Kenai Fords tour out of Seward was spectacular. In Homer they wanted $50 per person just to take us across the bay and then another $50 to come back and pick us up the next day. The scenery is spectacular everywhere. Enjoy.
