Kehei or Lahina?

Kehei or Lahina?
We are a family of 5. We love the beach, swimming, body boarding etc. We are planning a trip to Maui with our 3 teenagers (20.18.15). I remember when we went to Maui on our honeymoon we loved the beaches near Kehei/Wailea but it was pretty quiet. I hear Lahaina is fun, but how are the beaches? Appreciate any input.

The beaches near Lahaina are not as good for swimming as the beaches on Kihei. The Lahaina beaches have more coral, and are generally better for surfing. The Kihei beaches are wider and more sandy, without as much coral.

I should mention we will be coming from spending 5 days in Waikiki. For that reason, I am leaning toward some r & r in Kehei. The Maui Kamaole (?) or the Mana Kai condo complexes. Any input?

Beaches in Lahaina area are not good. Wailea Beach is good for body boarding, swimming, and snorkeling. Kaanapali beach is good for sunbathing and a quick dip in the water but the waves usually break on the shore so are not good for body boarding. It's OK for swimming once you get beyond the shore break. There is good snorkeling at the Black Rock end of Kaanapali Beach. IMO the best overall beach for what you mentioned you'd like to do would be Wailea beach. Hotels there are very expensive. But you can find more reasonable rates in Kehei and easily drive to Wailea Beach. One of the 3 Kamaole beaches in Kehei can also be good for body boarding at times. You can check out the waves just by driving by and see which is best on any particular day.

Thanks for all your help. We decided to stay in the Kihei area since we really want to bodyboard and snorkel. We found a great place on the beach. Kamaole Nalu in building 6, which is directly on the ocean. It gets mixed reviews but I think it depends on the unit. My friend has stayed there many times and loves it. Now it's time for snorkel trips, hiking etc research..the fun stuff.

Great choice. I've stayed at Kamaole Nalu a couple of times with teenagers. They loved boogie boarding a few steps away at Kam II beach. Nice to have small mall right across the street with places to eat and shop. There is only 1 building; it is a small complex. I think only 36 units total. The "6" units are oceanfront, with "1" units being farther back and closest to road. I particularly like the large lanais at Kamaole Nalu.
