kayaking on kauai

What's the best bet for inexperienced kayakers on Kauai? Assuming the kayaker is fit, but just has limited experience, is it possible to kayak along the Na Pali coast?

Along the NaPali coast? No way. Every time I've been anywhere along the NaPali coast the water has been very rough. Nothing an inexperienced kayaker would want to deal with.

No. This is seasonal, from April to October and a 12 hour day with only one stop on land for lunch. It is a 17 mile trip one way and once you start there is no turning back, you are committed. Definitely not for the inexperienced.

Stick to the Wailua River -- or maybe Hanalei.

We kayaked in the Wailua River - 8 of us and only 2 experienced kayakers. Party included a 5 year old up to our oldest member 75 - perfect day

My motto is "when in Rome....", and in Hawaii that to me means nixing the kayak and trying paddling an outrigger, which I believe is the state's official team sport. We tried it for the first time a couple years ago on the Big Island, and it remains one of our favorite memories of that trip. Regardless of where you stay, you'll likely have a few options nearby.

Thanks for the reality check, songbook. Sad, but it's hard to believe she was kayaking on the Na Pali coast.

Well as far as reality check, the poor woman wasn't killed, she capsized hit her head and drowned. May she RIP and her companion recover emotionally. And bless the rescuers who did their best.

It doesn't say, but sounds like they were kayaking independently. Not a guided tour, with guides that do the trip on a daily basis and know the shoreline everchanging conditions.

Truth be known there are hundreds if not thousands who do the NaPali kayak each summer. I did consider it but after getting an email from an old poster Roxy who did it, I chose to take a pass. It can be a brutally long day, and there is no turning back once you leave Ke'e.

One year we stayed at Pu'u Poa and saw lots of kayakers who seemed to be going from Anini to Hanalei if one wants ocean kayaking. We have also done kayaking in Hanalei, beaching at St Regis for a pool side libation.

The thought of high seas which we kayaked in Maui without an out for 9 miles is just too strong of a physical and mental commitment for me. It is not an endeavor to take lightly, but would be a lifetime adventure for those prepared.
