Kauai-Places to stay or not to stay?
Heading to Kauai with Grandparents, Mom, Dad and kids (13 and 9) for Spring Break(Mar 18-26). Any advice on where to stay or NOT to stay. Looking for some excursions to keep not -a-fan-of-beach-going Grandparents as well as a good pool for a quick swim for kiddos when we aren't at the beach. Sounds like I do not want Lihue...sounds too commercial. Maybe Poipu? With a trip up to Hanalei? What are the current traffic conditions with construction that I am reading about? Any suggestions are welcome. Please no high rise...like the Outrigger we stayed at on The Big Island.
Thanks

I just posted a reply on your original forum and noticed this one. Never been to Kauai BUT I have been to Oahua and have researched places to stay. VRBO, a website for Vacation Rentals by Owner offers all kinds of options for accomodating family travel. Check it out for another option. Good luck

Suzie, we are not the Rockerfellers, but would probably be considered a middle of the road. Don't need to skimp on where we stay, but would like nice accomodations...clean, garden view or golf course view is fine..we will be out most of the day at beaches...just don't want a parking lot view if we can avoid it. Any recommendations?

we just got back from staying at the Grand Hyatt Kauai and we LOVED it..got a great deal on expedia.
I say that Poipu is the way to go.
Maybe try Kiahuna Plantation condos..great location and check vrbo.com
we had drinks at Duke's and so glad we didn't stay at the Marriott in Lihue.
Lots of deals out there.
We loved Kauai so much.
Expedia has a Hawaii air sale going on..book by the Jan. 19th and travel by June..rates as low as $288 pp.
Aloha

Love Hyatt, just stayed there, but it would be very expensive for a family of 6 for a week. Apart from the great breakfast buffet which is sometimes included, meals very pricey here. Kiahuna is a good choice for a family but the pool is across the road, not near the units. Agree that you should try VRBO.com, some great houses and condos to rent.
The Kalapaki Marriot was still being renovated this Dec, digging up plants with little bobcats poolside, fumes from varnishing doors, would not have wanted to stay there then! Would need to check out if they're finished.

It's been many years back, but when we went to Kauai, we stayed at the Waimea Plantation Cottages. The prices are on the high side -- on the other hand, you can get a bigger cottage and fit several folks in it (maybe even your whole crew, if that's what you want), which might well make it affordable. I have great memories of the Plantation Cottages and very much hope to go back some day.
One caveat: At least when were were there, Waimea wasn't exactly hopping, so if you are looking for action, it may not be the best choice. So it depends on what you are looking for. Personally, I loved the cottages.

I agree 100% with Hyatt Poipu. I have stayed there several times .. once as a couple, once with a mixed group of all ages like yours and once with family. Each time it was perfect! You cannot go wrong.

I've stayed on both sides of the island - Poipu is warm and drier. The North Shore up around Hanalei is wetter but very green and lush. I also like the Princeville area.
But really, it's such a small island either place is nice as you will probably have a car and can easily travel around the island.
You must not miss Hamura Simin in Lihue!
