Kauai january

Hi, We are going to Kauai the 1st week of Jan then onto Maui. We are looking to get married in Kauai. So far the Waimea Plantation and the Hanalie Colony resot appeals to me.
Basically I like the resort plushness, but not the resort numbers. Princeville looks nice, but yikes on price to get married there.
Any suggestions for which side of the Island we should stay, and where to get married?
I am thinking to stay half north for the sounds of surf, and half south to actually swim.
Thanks all.

Hanalei Colony Resort is not plush at all. Nice location but really kind of motelish. In January you might want to look to the south side. The Hyatt or Sheraton are really great. If you want a condo try Kiahuna Plantation. Good Luck Harry

Thanks. The Hyatt looks fab, but was afraid it might be too touristy.
Do you know anything about the Waimea plantation? Web site looks nice, but???
What is the wave action like on that side in Jan?
Also I have to stay on the north shore for some of the time to hit the sunset bars I've been reading about. I don't want to drive after a few happy drinks!

In January, odds are the surf will be uppppp all over our island of Kaua`i -- except for those rare flat-ocean winter days. So make your location choice based on weather for your wedding, not surf conditions. 8-)

Winter weather is typically sunnier and drier on the south (Po`ipu) and west (Waimea) sides of the island. Waimea Plantation Cottages are very, very special -- very "old Hawai`i" with lots of charm.

Or, if you decide that Po`ipu would be better (great sunsets there, BTW), in addition to the 2 main hotels there are many, many oceanfront condos:

thanks. Any suggestions on the northern area? I loved the looks of the Hale Lani, but they want a full week I believe.

I may have the name of the cottages wrong. It was something like hale lani, but very nice and rather private and pricey. I have lost track, I've been reading this site for days trying to get info.
I feel like I know Bill, Auntiearia and of course Kal!

Hale Lani is one of the cottages at
the secret beach estates in Kilauea.

http://secretbeachkauai.com/index.html

It says on their website that they have a 3 night minimum.

You will find something.

Bill, Thank you. Yes that is the place. Doesn't it look lovely?
We will be in Kauai during the holiday period, the 1st-7th so they want a full week. I think we should stay on the other side of the Island for 1/2 the trip so as not to drive so much. Also AuntieM suggest the other side for the wedding.
Is Hanalei bay resort any better than Hanalei colony resort? The web site for Hanalei colony looks so nice, but a previous reply states not so much.
I have another ?
We will be landing in Honolulu Dec 31st. Any ideas of where to stay? I keep thinking I should try for something on the beach, but then we will be traveling from the east so will be pretty tired. But then again, it is New Years!
Condo vs resort... We will be in a condo the next week in Mauai, so I thought I should splurge a bit in Kauai.
Sorry for the goofy thought process, I am a bit neurotic trying to figure this all out!
Thanks, Linda

We stayed near Kapaa for a week in January in a beautiful condo on the beach. It's the Kaha Lani, and they have a website. It's $259 per night.
You can drive anywhere on the island in a very short time, and the beach in front of our condo was almost private.

Boovt, do you mean you want to stay at he same place where you get married?
How festuve, or elaborate, is the wedding?Very private, or large group? that may help Fodor folks with ideas.
Ok, a few ideas...
First, as AuntieMaria says, think "the weather" assuming you want an outdoors wedding. HBR has beautiful grounds (rooms vary with the condos' owners) but is on North Shore--not necessarily sunny in January!
Hyatt is did not feel touristy to me any of the times I've been there , as both a "visitor" (gorgeous place) or when i stayed there. It is expansive enough so you won't feel folks are "breathing down your necks" at your ceremony. The lawns, the sea...ahhhh.
Waimea Plantation is unique- but I sense you want something a bit lusher (maybe cuz you said "plush") . The location is a bit off the beaten track. Quiet, on the quiet part of the island.
I'd stay in one place--the south side--at that time of year. It's an easy drive to the north shore from Poipu.
As for sounds fo crashing surf--I've not stayed there, but there's a property in Poipu area called Makahuena that is literally on the edge of the ocean. I've seen some recent great deals for it.
IF you stay in the Kapaa are, there's a heiau on the Lae Nani site. its' called Kukui Heiau and is on a small bluff overloooking the ocean. AND it's about a 3 minute walk along the beach to Kal's beloved Islander hotel. You could have pre-wedding toasts at the Sand Bar. The hieau site is free. There were several small weddings there that we could see from the condo at Lae Nani. (go to Outrigger.com for pix of the actual property).
Now it's MY turn to apologize to you, for the winding thought process here. As for you sounding goofy and neurotic, don't worry...it's the norm here!

Makahuena web site from Castle Resorts

http://www.castleresorts.com/Home/ac...huena-at-poipu

Yuu can also rent from idividual condo owners. I've never stayed here, but have always been intrigued by its description as a place where the sounds of the surf, and the seaspray itself, reach to the room's lanai.

Funny, I find Hyatt, too touristy. Have you looked at Whaler's Cove? And yes more info on where you want to marry and where you want to bed down would be helpful, as they don't have to be the same place.

Okay. If only I knew what I want!
So far I can tell you this...Just the 2 of us, quiet, romantic, champagne ..that kind of thing.
Photography is essential, sunset romance, you know..??
We are staying in a condo on Maui, so I can splurge a bit while in Kauai.
I don't know about staying where we get married other than ease.
I looked into the helicopter thing, but thought it might be a bit hooky.
We will do the heli tour either way.
Sunset, beach or gardens, private, photos, flowers, champgne.
Okay I've rattled on enough.
Thanks to all!

Aloha boovt! Many congrats on your upcoming wedding. Check out Nancy03's wonderful wedding pix at Secret Beach estate and her lovely reporting from a few years back.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=34534736

I had this bookmarked for a possible spot for celebrating my 25th w/ darling Mr. Makai

Don't be dissuaded from the north shore any time of year... if you love the big surf and rainbows mixed w/ sun and showers, you'll adore the north shore. It's gorgeous rain or shine. Enjoy the variations in the weather... makes for a great time. I'll also be in Kauai in Jan... north shore for our entire stay. Maybe we'll bump into each other somewhere near Hanalei!

For "sunset, beach or gardens, private, photos, flowers, champgne"... Bill's suggestion of Secret Beach is a perfect choice for such an occasion to celebrate... especially if you want something different... check out Nancy's photos... they will knock your socks off.

Mahalo and enjoy the planning... it's more than half the fun! Aloha!
