Kauai in the winter w/Mom?
We are taking my 74 year old Mother in Law on her first trip to Hawaii this January or February. Someone suggested Kauai. She has slight mobility issues in that she has arthritic hips, but can still walk on mostly level or low grade slopes. We're up for any and all suggestions at this point. We've been to Oahu, Maui and Big Island, but never Kauai. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

For January or February,Poipu would be your best bet, look into condo rentals there. Check out reviews and the Kauai forum over on Trip Advisor, lots of posters who regularly visit the area as well as some who live there and can make recommendations. Providing your budget would be helpful.
PS - The Fern Grotto is quite unimpressive, the boat ride up the river is very nice, there is a little bit of uphill hiking involved to get to the Grotto, but truthfully it never recovered fully from Hurricane Iniki. Nice places to see are the Waimea Grand Canyon and Kokee state park with the Kalalau outlook (get there by 9 before the fog rolls in) and also a trip to the beautiful North Shore.

Ha! We were recently there after hiking the Canyon Trail - must have been early afternoon, and you couldn't see past the guardrail! Good thing I've been there before
(Couldn't agree more about the Fern Grotto - there's plenty of places in Kauai where you can see beautiful, luxuriant "nature" without paying for a hokey boat ride and walk)

While Poipu is the more sunny choice for the winter months, there is still something about being on the North Shore during and after a storm, when we saw 21 waterfalls on Bali Hai/the mountains. You might consider starting with a couple of nights on the North Shore (no better view than from the St. Regis at Princeville - although it's a bit pricey) and then getting down to Poipu for more of the relaxed visit.
And driving the Grand Canyon/Waimea is a must.
Have friends on Kauai and have been there many many times over the years, so if you have more Q's - please don't hesitate to email me @: [email protected]

Your MIL might be able to snorkel at Poipu or Lydate Park. We were just in Kauai last month and there were a number of older folks who clearly had not snorkeled before but were enjoying the experience in the shallow areas.
