Kauai grocery stores and fresh seafood

My family and I are renting a house in the Poipu area of Kauai in June. Any suggestions for the best grocery store on the Island to stock our house for the week?

Also, we love seafood (who doesn't). Where should we go to buy fresh fish etc? Are there charter boats that sell their catch, or what is the best seafood market? Thanks.

Hi, we just got back from Kauai and while there stumbled upon the cost-u-less in Kapa'a.It is on the Kuhio hwy but sits back a bit.It was like a small Costco but you dont have to have a card. We found the best prices on Liquor there and alot of other things, they also had some meat and seafood. They dont have a huge selection though and some things we still had to get at Safeway but it did save us money. They are not real close to Poipu either but Kapa'a is awesome to go to anyway. Good luck and have fun, hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. I guess we'll hit both the Cost-u-less and Safeway for the bulk of our groceries. I'm still hoping to find a real "local" place to buy fresh fish and seafood though to cook at our rental home.

Fish Express in Lihue has great fresh seafood. Also the fish store behind the Dolphin restaurant in Hanalei has great fresh fish. Many of the smaller local "supermarkets" (not the Safeway) have really good, fresh seafood as well as premade local favorites. The Safeway is good for those things you get on the mainland, but might be hard to come by there. There is a cery nice health food store in Kapaa called Papayas.

There's a seafood shop in Koloa opposite the post office (unless it closed).

Their are a couple of supermarkets in Koloa town (right next to Poipu). They'll have all you need.

It's pretty far to drive all the way to Lihue or Kapaa to go grocery shopping.

Wow. Great information. Thanks so much for the suggestions and web link. This will be our first time staying on Kauai (I did a day trip from Maui 20 years ago), and I'm really enjoing gathering info. and learning about the Island. Any and all feedback is welcome (favorite restaurants, farmers markets etc). Thanks again!

I'd have to second that, travelngolfin. I especially like the smaller supermarket (sueoka's, i think) in Koloa..although even the nearby larger BigSave there has more local goods than the Safeway. One of the medium sized local supers near kapaa had locally grown free range beef. It was really super delicious. Don't tell anyone, though. oh wait. sigh.

I know its way to late to help you. But for anyone else going to Kauai try the Ahi Sesame Poke at FoodLand in kappa! Its the best Poke you will ever eat!!! Every local here will agree with me if you ask them. It is the best and half price of anywhere else, $4.99 per pound.

Soooooo many places for good, fresh ahi poke on our island -- Safeway, Foodland, and the many local fish markets and plate lunch places.

Try 'em all, to find the one that you prefer! 8-)
