Of the 2 different companies we've used, we definitely like Kipu Ranch Adventures the best. There is also a new one being offered on the west side (Waimea) by the Gaylord Robinson company which uses their sugar cane paths - it's probably flatter than the other ones, but I don't know anything more about it. Kipu Ranch Adventures was definitely a lot of fun!

Kipu Ranch Adventures was recommended by our guide book, and they didn't disappoint. This was by far the best money spent on my trip to Kauai. I did a Na Pali coast boat tour and a helicopter tour, but neither came close to the stunning scenery we experienced on Kipu Ranch. Our guides, Tom and Alfred, were fantastic. We never felt rushed or unsafe, even though this was our first time ever on an ATV. If you're interested in swimming in brackish water bring your suit. You can take a dip off the rope swing used in Indiana Jones.

The other one (and the 1st one we ever took back in 2000) was Kauai ATV in Koloa, on the south shore - the people had quite a bit of "attitude" about them, at least back then...Kipu Ranch Adventures is basically south, although a little further north than the one mentioned above. If you go on Kipu Ranch Adventures, ask for the guide whose name is Punohu - he's terrific, with quite a bit of native Hawaiian pride! Enjoy!!!

wauhob3: What's a "mud bug" ?
My kids are 12 & 10. Do any of these places have ATV's that will allow a child to ride on the back of the parents vehicle?
I looked up the Kipu Ranch web site, and they just show this "Mule", a small, jeep-like vehicle that carries passengers. Is that the only way children can take the tour?

A Mudbug is a dunebuggy type vehicle that has a driver and one child. I think there are mudhogs that hold more.
You can see them here.
