Hi I have been to Maui 3 times. Last time was with a 12 yr. old and 2 teenage girls. We stayed in the Kehei area close to Wailea. I prefer this area, , evenings the kids went and played tennis , basketball at the public courts and met some nice locals. There is a theatre, ice-creamplace , nice beaches for swimming, and boogieboarding. Surfing is better up in Kaanapali, but we don't surf.
Try Margarita's Mexican Cantina it is just before Sugar Beach resort(my favorite) Cheap jugs of Marg's at happy hour and free natchos. Kiawakapu beach is nice, Makena is dangerous at times but signs are posted. The girls went on a 6 hour Kayak trip and rented mopeds one week. Great fun!!! have a good time.

I really prefer Wailea over Kaanapali, but with 2 teenage boys there is more activity in Kaanapali. On Maui, they would probably enjoy the bike ride down Haleakala. Snorkeling at Moloikini was also a high point for us. Kimo's in Lahaina is a great place to eat!
On Kauai, be sure to drive all the way up to the backside of the Na Pali coastline. (Past the canyon- its a long drive but well worth the effort.)
If you can do a Capt Zodiac trip that is absolutely breath taking and fun to see the coastline.
Those are my two favorite islands.. Have a great trip.
Best bet is on the west coast.Kaanapali Beaches.
The Sheraton just reopened on Kaanapali Beach.
Beautiful resort. It's by Black Rock.Great swimming
and snorkeling site.It all new!There's a Planet
Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe in Lahaina,5 minutes
from Kaanapali.Take the Trilogy excursion to Lanai.
It's an all day affair but worth it.If you want to
try biking down Haleakala I strongly recommend
Aloha Bike Tours.Very small group, you go at your own
pace.Other tours hurry you down.It can be a little
scary for a 12 year old. They have a page on the internet.
