Kauai Accomodations

My wife and I are going to Hawaii for 1st time in late Jan or in Feb. Thinking of Kauai, thinking of sunny parts - not rainy parts, thinking of small places (not big hotels or condos)- maybe a B&B or cottage, thinking of on the beach or easy walk to it, thinking quiet and not too spendy. Think we're crazy or do you know such a place?

We stayed in a fabulous condo near Spouting Horn. Right on the ocean but only good for snorkeling not a sandy beach. I don't know what your "spendy" limit is. We went through Suite Paradise to stay at Whalers Cove. Also noticed that Gloria of Gloria's B & B owned/rented alot of properties in the area. Try http://www.gloriasvacationrentals.com/ to see if any of these fit your needs. Have a great time, we did!

Suuuuz,
I will drive by Whaler's and give it a personal peek. I like to see if diff poster's have the same "range o' tastes".
Sounds nice and the website looks good too.
Only downside for us is the Poipu locale.

If Al is going over in Jan/Feb, he does have better odds in sunny weather in Poipu.

Kal,

Have a great time in Kauai. Like you need to hear that from me to have a good time, HA!

Whalers is a nice private place in a quiet area. We visited the Hyatt, felt it would be good if we took the kids but otherwise, no thanks. Seemed like lots of the houses, cottages and condos along the section of shore towards the Beach House and Spouting Horn were owned or being rented by Gloria.

I know you like the Kapa'a area because of the proximity to both north and south but we loved driving around with the top down and it really mattered not at all where we stayed.

It seems your current residence also reflects your "middle" attitude. Neither east nor west but the best of both???

Suz,
Thx...we shall try and have a good time...May be difficult given the current weather forecasts for 12-30 thru 1-7-02(sunny...80 degrees....) Can change in a heartbeat, tho.

Living on the "bad side" of the trax does have it's benefits!

Yeah it's a hard life! By east/west I meant, not the "BIG" city nor the mountains. Guess I was thinking bigger picture.

So if you're dreaming 80 degrees now, will you be dreaming fog when you board the plane for your return trip. Better pack a sweater on the bottom of your suitcase!!!!

We'll be needing a Kauai fix by the time you return so make notes about what you ate and what you saw so we can all pretend we were there when we read your trip report. Happy New Year and cheers!

Lots of options. Thought of two smaller properties that are affordable and appealing. Garden Isle Cottages are near the condos that Suzie recommends. They are not as upmarket as the units at Whaler's Cove and don't have the full on oceanfront location (they are located on the edge of a rocky inlet with great snorkeling and some water views.) Owned by two artists, they are appealing and affordable. The same couple has another small building up near Poipu Crater with great views, a lap pool, but a little bit of a walk to the beach.
I would recommend looking at Hideaway Cove Villas. These are fairly new units a short walk from Brenneke's Beach and Poipu Beach Park. Again, these are owned and run by a local couple and are really nicely furnished and affordable.
Beach front units are hard to find in the Poipu area. Both of these recommendations are not beachfront but are nice spots that are not terribly commercial, crowded, or overly touristy.

Recently returned from Kauai -- stayed at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation which we highly recommend. However, if you are looking for a B&B - we went by Gloria's Spouting Horn B&B and it was really lovely -- right on the water, but probably not a swimmable beach. It is on the south shore, not far from Poi'pu Beach. Although we didn't tour it, I would certainly consider it if we were to go back again.

I'm jumping in on another post- bad etiquette be damned- hoping Kal has not yet jetted off to the Garden Island. Kal, in one of these posts you recommended one of the helicopter tours. Can't remember which one. We are regular Kauai visitors but have always turned our noses up at "activities," prefering low-key pursuits like beach time and hikes- and ultra low-key activities like finding the best deal on Myer's rum (K-mart) and local produce (Koloa Farmer's market on Mondays.) I'm now thinking that for my beloved's 40th, might need to do the helicopter thing. Any input..... (He said he'd never go up in one again after weeks spent hanging out of one documenting the Valdez oil spill for the state of Alaska, but that's been a long time and we're talking Hawaii this time.) Any input appreciated!

mj,

We have gone on Jack Harter and really liked it. We got Jack himself and you could tell his sincere love for the island and people in general.

He took us over the Napali and slowy circled up until we saw a rainbow and then held his postiton so we could take pics of the cliffs with the 'bow.
This was in '89 so I don't know if he's still flying himself.

We had to take a "post-Iniki" tour in '92 or '93 and for some reason flew on Ohana. I don't think they are around anymore.

My good buddy from "Joisey", Margot aka Margot, has good things to say about InterIsland Helicopters. I think they even land near a waterfall for a quick picnic?

My low key pursuit this trip will be golf, golf and maybe some golf. I may go in the ocean a time or 2.

All I need to do is golf Poipu and I've hit them all.

2 mo'

Hey Kal
I'm going in 113 days. I plan on golfing at least 3 times. Is you're favorite course Poipu. How are The Keile course & the 10 hole course ?

Thanks -Jay

jay,Seems like only yesterday it was 113!

Puukea The Grove 10 hole course is my favorite! Great scenery. On hole # 7, if you can hit a shot 700yds, you'd drive into an area where Speilberg filmed Jurrasic Park.

Princeville was worth every penny and lost golf balls. After 4:00 p.m. they rented carts for $20 so you can just tour the course. Take a lot of film.

The 2 courses at the Marriott Lagoons were still in good shape last year. I love the hole right below the Whaler Brew pub.

Wailua is a nice public course.
Kiahuna was in good shape last year. The year before it wasn't.
Try a Kiahuna Joe's Omlette (instead of spinach they use taro leaves-ask for a few jalapenos in it too and they may ask if you know me) and then hit the links.

The funkiest course on the island is Kukuilono out in Kalaheo. 9 hole pub-course. Views to match P'ville course but the course is a diff type of grass. But for around $10 a round, can't beat it. Stop by Kalaheo Steakhouse or The Brick for a pizza after a round.

Poipu is the only course I haven't torn up yet! Each year in Nov. we whet our whistle by watching Tiger Woods and 3 other PGA tour winners golf there. Last one was perfect weather! It's usually blowing pretty hard on that course.

Shipped my clubs over last week. Thought I may have a prob with all the security and all.
Forrrrrrrrrrrrre and 2,
Kal

Thanks for the info kal !!
that's a great idea shipping your clubs beforehand. I guess I'd have to know someone on the island to do that. Is it very costly ? I'm travelling from the east coast. I watched both days of the grand slam....I even taped it & edited out the commercials. Poipu looks like a beatiful course....I can't wait ?

www.surfinglive.com for best webcams on Oahu beaches. I look at every now and then on some days you get live moving images of 20+ foot waves and you also see surfers ploughing them. Not everyday but you do hit it this time of year. check out sunset beach and it is also good if your computer can handle high bandwith viewing.

J,
If you stay at a hotel, they may let you ship directly to them. I send them to my golf buddy who used to work at the hotel where we stay.

I bought a larger hardcase this year. Mrs Kal saw all the extra room and thought "hmmmm" and put some extra shoes in it. "You never know"....

We stick around 6 of her clubs in my bag and we have a foldable quiver that she uses when we golf on Kauai.

Total UPS was around $120 but well worth it to avoid the hassle factor. The old case was only around $80 to ship.
Believe it or not, over the past years, it was only $40 to ship home, even with old clothes, new stuff. The UPS guy told me "One lane hiway over, 2 lane hiway back".

We had b'fast at the Poipu clubhouse and your are right. Beautiful course. Pville is better lookin', tho IMHO.
