Kauai - Where to Stay

We will be heading to Kauau in April - our first visit. We plan to spend a good part of every day hiking. We also want to snorkel some. Generally speaking...what part of the island will have the best access to a variety of hiking and snorkeling?

Ultimately, we will look for a condo or villa once we nail down the location. Thanks.

A price range would help.

Sorry - I tried to be clear. I am not looking for specific advice about a specific hotel or condo. I am inquiring as to the general location on the island that folks think will have the best access to both hiking and snorkeling (e.g., north, south, etc.). I am trying to get my arms around where things are on the island.

Once I nail down a general location, I am sure I will have questions about specific lodging options, at which time, I will be back asking more questions!

If it helps with the general location, I can tell you that ultimately, we would like something with the following:
- prefer condo over hotel
reasonably close to several hiking/snorkeling options
- a balcony/lanai
- a view (ocean would be nice, but not a must
- ideally walking distance to some dining/bar option (e.g., next to a resort that we can walk to)
- price range? Haven't really figure it out, but probably $200 to $300 per night

There is hiking all over the island, and at that time of year, probably your best bets for snorkeling would be either Anini on the north or Poipu on the south.

Based on what you've listed I think Poipu is a good option. And it's an easy drive to great hiking spots in Waimea Canyon. Kauai is pretty easy to drive from one part of the islaand to another.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but my thoughts were that, from my research, anywhere on the island offers most of those things in some way or another.

When I planned to go last year with DH (it fell through), I planned either the North Shore, Hannalei area or Poipu area. Definitely did NOT want to stay on the east shore, as I wanted quiant & cozy near the beach.

Now, I am planning next May to go with DS and have chosen the east coast due to it's central location and Kal's recommendation of the place.
It has a cool beach bar that I hope my DS will find attractive so that he won't be tempted to drive after a few beers, he can just walk back to the room!
