Kauai - Tidepools vs. Roy's

We'll be in Kauai in Feb. and are looking for thoughts for our "splurge" dinner out. It's our first time to Kauai and from my research, I understand that Tidepools has the atmosphere and Roy's has the food. Which gets your vote as a place to celebrate an anniversary & a birthday? Or, is there another place we should consider?

Thanks!

The food at Roy's was very good. However, it was in a strip mall. You definately are not going for the decor.

You might want to look into the Princeville Hotel for dinner. The hotel has one of the best sunset views on the island from their Living Room lounge. All the restaurants will have nice view of the bay and the mountains.

I went to Tidepools in September. Got a great table right next to the water near the waterfall. The place is really beautiful. We also went to The Beach House which has a stunning sunset view. WHat's the difference. Beach House has wayyyyyyyy better food. We had the best meal there in a beautiful setting that I will always remember as Kauai. Tidepools can actually be anywhere because it is a manmade pond. The food was fine, a little more expensive than the Beach House though but not nearly as good. Roys is right near Kepki's in a little shopping mall as ryan wrote. Sister went there in November and reported that the food was very good, she also went to Tidepools and felt for what she ordered they were comperable.

Sorry, it should be Keoki's not Kepkis.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Is it feasible to have drinks for the sunset at The Beach House and dinner at Tidepools? Also, do you have to pay to park at the Hyatt for dinner?

Absolutely, have drinks in the bar. The view from the bar at the Beach House is very good. Actually we ate our dinner in the bar because the table had a superior view to the one we would have been seated at in the dining area. Having a drink there is a pretty popular thing so you should get there early or plan on sqeezing in. The night we ate at the Beach House there were too many clouds to get that awesome sunset effect but it was a beautiful evening anyway.

We didn't pay to park at the Hyatt. We used self park. They have valet if you like.

Sorry, one more thing... have you checked the Rants and Raves on this board? There are many reviews of both places.

Alohaaaa,
Agree w/ Suuuuz. We prefer Beach House to either Roy's, Tides or Keoki's.

Pupus at Beach House then dinner at Tides would be my choice if you like to do both. Tides is a pretty cool atmosphere. I could have used a flashlight! (one minor side effect from lasik eye surgery).

Roy's has good food but as mentioned in diff. posts, it's in a strip mall.

You can't beat the sunset view from "The Beach". If you do go in Feb. you may be lucky enuff to see some whales!

The bar at the Sheraton comes close but we were disappointed with the service.

The Beach House hands down. Can't beat the food for dinner and they have a fabulouse decadent chocolate dessert -- wow!

Tidepools is very good too. Plus, afterwards you can wander around the grounds of the Hyatt and relax on the bench swings and hammocks by the ocean. Very romantic!

You can't loose either way.
Have fun!!

A huge vote for the Beachhouse, our favorite restaurant-anywhere. Gorgeous views, great waiters, wonderful food.... perfect. Tidepools feels like (and is) a fancy hotel restaurant on an artificial lagoon. Food just doesn't compare to BH. Have also eaten at Donatoni's at the Hyatt- again a beautiful restaurant but the food is just so-so and the prices outrageous. If you want a little dose of the Hyatt, try drinks at sunset at the Seaview Terrace. They have wonderful local singers and hula performers and a lovely torchlighting ceremony at sunset. We especially enjoy the Keiki hula (kid's hula troupe) on Tuesday and Saturday evenings. Sitting on the terrace sipping a Mai Tai and soaking in the music and the sunset for the price of a drink makes this a great value. Also, we have had some lovely meals at Plantation Gardens at Kiahuna Plantation. Meals on their beautiful Koa veranda can be very romantic and their banana fritters and homemade ice cream are pretty darned tasty.
